Yay or nay? Worst cravings in the world for hash browns! I've not read that I can't have them but I want other opinions! X

This is hilarious! Op read the nhs 'guidelines' and make up your own mind. I have eaten some Brie this pregnancy, some pate, some rare steak etc. that's my choice. Ignor other people!

"How many pineapples would one need to ingest to induce labour? Or are they used as a suppository?" Grin I love mumsnet.

The NHS list is good enough for me... a surprising number of people whose opinions I generally trust have looked concerned when I told them that - they think I shouldn't be eating Mr Whippy ice-cream (which neither contains raw eggs nor is made with non-pasteurised milk, in this country at least), anything made with meat that I didn't cook myself, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. But then everyone's surprised that liver is on the forbidden list. Not that I'd be eating it anyway.

My biggest concern with bacon and hash browns as a meal would be the resulting heartburn and probable constipation... but I might consider it was worth it!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 28/09/2012 14:22

Mr whippys are at a higher risk of harbouring ecoli or salmonella or some such nasty due to the temperature they are.

Not that it stops me, sometimes only a Mr whippy will do :)

GrandPoohBah · 28/09/2012 14:25

I had pâté followed by a rare steak a couple of weeks ago, and last night I ate sushi for dinner. It was all delicious :) the NHS guidelines are just that - guidelines, not rules. Read them, maybe do a bit of research around them, then make your own decisions.

Sod any of those things causing any problems; I ate almost an entire packet of soft dried apricots before bed last night and have been very uncomfortable all day Blush

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 28/09/2012 15:04

Oh I've also had mr whippy, it is on the 'forbidden list' I think but I forgot Grin

I'm still alive, as is the tap dancer inside me!

chezziejo · 28/09/2012 15:53

Sold out. Bloody sold out of hash browns I tell thee.

zigwig · 28/09/2012 16:40

Haha clearly they've been inundated with pregnant women chezziejo.

Panzee · 28/09/2012 16:45

My midwife told me that whippy ice cream had raw egg in it.
Not according to the ingredients list on the van. :o Had it with flake and sprinkles.

halloweeneyqueeney · 28/09/2012 16:47

I don't think its the ingredients, think its the fact that its not refrigerated in between runs. I used to work in a shop with a machine and it was turned on in the morning and off in the evening and it just sat there getting warm all night!

halloweeneyqueeney · 28/09/2012 16:47

also they're quite hard to clean properly (if the place is bothered) and they DO get grim inside!

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 28/09/2012 16:53

Actually Mr Whippy and similar is one of the few things I actually did avoid. They are so hard to clean inside that apparently they are linked to a surprisingly high number of suspected listeria cases.

That, excessive alcohol and pre-washed bagged salad were actually my main items to avoid (the salad one is listeria too).

TheTermagantToaster · 28/09/2012 18:33

Sushi isn't banned though. Apart from raw shellfish and weird stuff like swordfish, it's fine if it's been frozen before preparation.

The Mr Whippy thing is grim. I never knew!

halloweeneyqueeney · 28/09/2012 18:38

nah sushi is fine if it's shop bought because of the way it's processed, if it has tuna etc in it then it has to be LIMITED not totally avoided because of mercury, but I don't have sushi more than once a week anyway so that's fine

have had comments at work when I've had VEGITABLE sushi with me for lunch!, they'ld obviously rather I had a plate of chips and some cake Hmm

and I LIKE ryvita! it doesn't get squished by someone else's lunchbox in the staff fridge like sandwiches do - and dur I'm having it along side a load of other things so I AM OBVIOUSLY NOT STARVING MY BABY ON A CRAZY STARVATION DIET!

my workmates are such "feeders" when you're pregnant!

giraffe213 · 01/10/2012 08:59

Halloweeney I didn't know that about Mr Whippy being stored at room temp overnight and then refrozen - that's gross! I'm fairly sure that violates food safety rules though? Anyway I don't think the nhs knows either because they said it's fine last time I checked the website. They didn't mention bagged salad either.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 01/10/2012 09:40

Thing is Giraffe, the NHS guidance isn't actually that evidence based on nuanced. It is just a good starting point for someone who is confused.

For example, it says to avoid raw eggs because of salmonella risk. This was true years ago, and may be in other countries. But eggs with the lion stamp are salmonella vaccinated. So a soft boiled egg, prepared at home from a lion stamped egg is a lesser risk of salmonella than, for example, food from a restaurant which isn't following food safety rules properly.

Likewise they say avoid all pate, but there isn't some magic problem with ingredients because they become pate. If you home make a mushroom pate, chill to set and serve immediately, it is no more of a risk than it's constituent ingredients . It is all to do with storage and the amount of time it hangs around before you eat it (plus the fact that many pates are liver based).

On the lettuce, have a google of lettuce and listeria and see how often bagged lettuce has been recalled...

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 01/10/2012 09:41

*or naunced.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 01/10/2012 09:41

Jeez, can't type. Or nuanced.
