Has anyone got any recommendations for a bottle brand? With DS1 I use tommee tippee closer to nature... They were ok not brill. I was looking at the MAM ultivents.. But now have concerns that they are prone to leaking?!

Any recommendations anyone?
Also can anyone tell me the current guidelines on making up feeds? With DS I used to make them up (water +powder) after dinner and bung them in the fridge.. Is this still ok?

Can't comment on the MAM bottles as I used tommee tippee, but guidelines are:
Ideal way - make up bottle with water above 70 degrees, cool quickly and use straight away.

If not possible - make up with water above 70 degrees, cool and refrigerate as quickly as possible. Use within 12 hours.

Only ever add powder to hot water, the cases of E-coli were in babies whose powder had been added to cooled boiled water :)

PS overnight we just used to use cartons, and got DS used to them being room temp rather than having to warm them :)

I used mam and they only leak when they are not put together properly..

Avent classic bottles are great and I wouldn't use another brand!

Ds didn't like avent, they made him dribble terribly.

I would try a few when the baby is here rather than buy big sets for that reason.

Dr browns are really good although I had no probs with my tommee tippee bottles

SecretCermonials · 20/09/2012 16:26

Definitely wont be using tommee tippee they gave DS terrible wind, NUK have been recommended to me, so was going to buy one small mam one nuk and see, was just concerned as have read a few reviews where MAMs had leaked or let water in when warming, just wanted to check it wasnt a common fault

Oooh my HV said it was better to add powder to cooled boiled water and use immediately (ie. less than 70 degrees) than to keep the made up bottle in the fridge

Guide to bottle feeding

Please ignore anyone who says it's OK to do it any other way.

I don't understand the 70 degree advice at all (although i appreciate it is the current official advice). I mentioned this to my dad who is a dentist and he said water at 70 degrees would not be sterile. I don't get why 70 degrees is the 'magic' temperature.

Rockchick1984 · 20/09/2012 17:08

70 degrees is the lowest temperature that will kill off most of the bacteria, some of the nutrients are destroyed by boiling water so it's the best compromise.

Well from what im reading, i think i will do
What i did with DS, make up feeds and refridgerate in advance, i was never one to add powder to cold water as couldnt see the point, also used cartons for all the while feeds are piddly

That's really helpful rightup thank you.

RightUpMyRue · 21/09/2012 08:40

You're welcome Trazzle. That's a new leaflet that you probably won't see in your baby clinic/surgery (unless they're super organised which most of us aren't)for a while but it's very clear on what's OK and what's not.

Anyone who says it's OK to do things differently or they plan on doing it the way their mum/friend did is taking uneccesary risks with their babies health. The advice and guidelines are out there to protect babies health not to try to make people's lives harder. Once you get into the habit of doing it this new way and your baby falls into a feeding pattern it won't be difficult.
