baby clothing confusion

I'm probably being a bit stupid here but every guide I find or shop I look at online seems to have different definitions of sleepsuits, bodysuits, all in ones etc

are they in fact all the same thing?

is there a particular one I need for the new baby? I know there is much talk of vests as well

sorry if I sound ignorant!

Sleeveless vests with poppers are worn like underwear over the baby's nappy. Then a babygro goes over the top, the ones with long sleeves and feet in them. They would also be called sleep suits I guess. That's what mine wore anyway, with a cardigan over the top. I didn't put them in actual clothes / outfits until they were a bit older, due to all the changes they needed.

Thank you! I can't find any vests online at mothercare - think they are described as sleeveless bodysuits there

so you think a babygro = sleepsuit = bodysuit

so basically looking for undies - sleeveless and overs - sleeved with feet?

plus hats and booties and all those bits

plus pramsuit plus snowsuit....

I'm pretty certain they are all the same thing, I suspect they only give them different names to make you think you need to buy all of them. Wink

IME we mostly use
Loads of baby grows/sleepsuits/whatever - Preferably with feet and in built scratch mitts
And these (short and long sleeved)

Other than that, buy socks rather than scratch mitts, they stay on better

Some vests have sleeves, short or long, if you're using them in winter. However, none of them have legs.

Then you're right, the outer layer can be called a babygro/sleepsuit/bodysuit but is basically an all-in-one suit that has legs and sleeves, usually with feet (although you can get them without feet for the summer). Some people use these just at night but like Picnic, I think it's nice to keep them in a babygro all the time whilst they're little, no gaps between socks and trousers or between tops and trousers.

A pramsuit could be described as a snowsuit, they're the same really, just you get different thicknesses depending on what time of year it is and what you want to dress them in.

It's confusing when all the retailers use different names for the same items!

Bodysuit = vest with poppers (+ usually with short shoulder cap sleeves, can also get sleevless and long sleeved)

Sleepsuit = babygrow

For a newborn the vests/bodysuits with short sleeves are the most useful - wouldn't bother with the sleeveless ones. You will need a few packets of them.

If your baby is due in the middle of winter then a few long sleeved ones for cold nights might be a good idea.

Over the top of the vest/bodysuit/whatever you want to call it you will need a babygrow (often called sleepsuit) Again, you will need a few packs of these in the newborn size and also in 0-3.

If it is cold you might want to put a cardigan on top of that and if you are going out in really cold weather then a snowsuit might be needed.

vest = bodysuit and can come with no/short/long sleeves but never have legs
sleepsuit/babygrow= long sleeves and long legs with feet.

pramsuit and snowsuit are the same thing you only need 1 maybe 2 if you have quite a sicky baby

thank you guys - this is really helpful and the links are brilliant - really appreciate all this help

i feel slightly less stupid - it does seem designed to confuse....

Mothercare call their vests bodysuits and babygros are sleepsuits. If you buy them from supermarkets (much cheaper than mothercare) then they have a little picture on of the item, I think mothercare do too but not sure about online. The vest/bodysuits keep them warm but also protect their skin from scratchy labels and poppers, you will notice the labels in bodysuits/vests are sited where the baby's nappy covers them.
