Thrush... Has anyone else had problems treating it?

Just wondered how long it took people to get rid if thrush when pregnant. My doctor said it could be a real pain to deal with - real irritation I would say. Problem is my dr gave me two courses if cream (internal and external) but I am now in Switzerland - probably got a week until all my insurance and residency papers are through - and the symptoms are back - only had a couple of days since I finished last treatment. Does anyone know if it is safe to use a third tube of cream - think I may go mad otherwise.
Have modified by diet and am eating loads of natural yoghurt. But now feel like crying as it won't go away.

Thanks xx

I suffered with thrush all the way through my first pregnancy and I'm sorry to say it was more a case of managing it than curing it.

Good news is it went away when he was born and haven't had any problems since, and haven't had it at all in this pregnancy.

You can put cold natural yoghurt, ahem, up there as well as eating it (not from the same pot! Grin). I don't know if it cures it really but it helps the itch.

You have much sympathy, thrush is horrible!

I really feel for you! I find taking a daily probiotic helps as well, something like acidolphilus. I suffer chronically outside pregnancy as well and find this really helps. Could you get a cream over the counter from the chemist?

I totally sympathise, having suffered myself.

I really highly recommend this gel-based natural product. My doctor is very into alternative treatments and I was suspicious when he recommended it, but it really works: www.amazon.de/Multi-Gyn-62-00-01-ActiGel-50-ml/dp/B001ENE17A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348053321&sr=8-1

It's called Multi-Gyn ActiGel. I live in Germany and you can buy it in the pharmacy here, which may also be the case in Switzerland.

It's worth a try and you can use it on a preventative basis as well. It's also said to be totally safe during pregnancy.

Thank you, chemist gave me some over the counter cream this morning so at least feeling more comfortable and less sorry for myself. Will ask about the gel next time I go in see if they have any and also look out for some probiotics - really missing boots as a one stop shop at the min as they do things differently here and I'm just learning where you buy this from and who you have to ask for that.

Glad to hear you haven't had it this pregnancy WantAnOrange but slightly nervous at the thought of another 2months of this. Do you mind me asking, I read somewhere that if you have thrush when you give birth you can pass it on to the baby (although apparently easily treated) did you experience this?

Thanks again xx

OH yes, totally agree with purplefairies, that gel is great too and good as a prevention also.

DS didn't get thrush when I gave birth but if he did, it's easily treated so don't worry.

Like WantanOrange I had thrush in my first pregnancy, but not my second. Towards the end I was prescribed Canesten in pessary form, which you insert like a tampon - it was a bit more effective than cream alone. I also had some success with cutting down on yeast-envouraging foods like bread, Marmite and fruit juice.

In the end DD didn't pass through my vagina as I had an EMCS, but if it's any comfort I've never had thrush while breastfeeding. Good luck!
