My fundal height measured at 35cm this morning, the midwife didn't mention this to me during my appointment, I noticed it when I got home and looked in my notes.

Does this seem a little small for someone who is 39+1 weeks?

Fundal height measurement isn't very accurate; it can vary depending on who does the measuring for one thing, and can also be affected by how the baby is lying. If the midwife was concerned she'd have mentioned it, so it's probably nothing to worry about. Do you have any more appointments booked? They'll check again then and you can ask about it if you're concerned.

It could be baby is engaged (and therefore taking up much less room). Did your notes say anything about 'station' or similar?

Pretty normal I think - mine was something like 36 at 40 weeks. Baby was 8lb 14oz ;).

I've been told I'm having a large baby (according to late scan) but am measuring on my dates with fundal height. I don't think it's hugely accurate, and like others have said, if baby's engaged that might make a difference.

Do you have a tailor made chart in your notes where they plot fundal height?

Have a look it might be you're measuring on or about as would be expected.

I'm 35+3 measuring 34 today. The MW plotted measurement on the chart on my notes and pointed out it's where she would have expected.

The baby has been engaged since 36 weeks so maybe that has something to do with it...

Just looked at the chart and it looks like its just under the 50th line (if that makes any sense)

I'm probably just worrying over nothing, midwife never even mentioned the measurement so guess she would have if she was concerned.

Got another appointment in a week so can ask then

I have been plotted on the 50th centile by one midwife all the way through then was 38cm at my 38 week appt by a different midwife. I don't think it is very accurate tbh. My scans have all been 50th centile so I trust them as being more accurate.

terilou87 · 18/09/2012 21:22

i wouldnt worry. if there was a problem your midwife would of told you. i was measuring small on my last two pregnancies and both pregs were over 7lb with my first i was measuring huge and sent for growth scan but he was 8lb1 and measuring big again but not worried at all as i know how inaccurate growth charts are.

Hi - I'm a GP and just under the 50th centile line is absolutely fine. The centiles simply mean the variation in fundal height for women which is still classed as 'normal'. The 50th centile represents the mean average. The 90th centile is at the high end, but still in the normal range, and the 25th centile is lower, or smaller than, the average woman, but also still within 'normal' limits. We are all different shapes and sizes! x
