Pregnancy vitamin WITHOUT iron? Anyone know of one?

I am looking for a pregnancy vitamin/mineral supplement that has no iron in, as I have chronic constipation even when not pregnant and I really can't cope with the iron in the Pregnacare supplement :(

Any suggestions at all??

I don't know of any but the sanatogen has about 2/3 of the iron the pregnacare so I went for that. I have IBS and am on codiene so at 8 weeks pregnant that's become a major issue for me too!

I thought about taking the necessary supplements separately but I couldn't find a separate vitamin D with a high enough content.

I was on pregnacare max and have switched to pregnacare plus omega 3 and for some reason the constipation has eased even though it still has iron in it (still a bit constipated but nowhere near as bad Blush. I am vegetarian and am also very nauseous and fussy about my food at the mo so was too worried not to take any.

I read another thread on here where people were discussing this and I think that Sainsburys or tesco own brand antenatal vits were recommended as having no iron....

Thanks very much! Will investigate the Sainsbury option...

On a similar note, does anyone know the safe amount of Vitamin D? I have found a lower iron supplement that seems to have a much higher level of vitamin d than pregnacare does: 25 mcg rather than 10 mcg. It is a pregnancy supplement but I don't want to OD on Vit D!!

Why do you need a pregnancy vitamin? Would it not be more sensible to take them separately?

HaveALittleFaith · 18/09/2012 16:27

My MW said at least 10mcg of vitamin D. The most I could find in separate was 2.5!

emeraldgirl1 · 18/09/2012 16:31

HaveALittleFaith - oh, at least 10 mcg, not a max of 10 mcg? That is different from what I had thought! Will try to investigate further.

JollyToddler I thought a pregnancy specialist one would be the best option as it will cover all the bases but not overdose on any one vit or mineral...

No I'm sure she said 'at least 10mcg'!

I have just remembered that my midwife said you can buy a very cheap pregnancy vitamin via the NHS which has all the NHS recommended vitamins for pregnancy which doesn't include iron. Might be worth asking yours or your GP.

minipie · 19/09/2012 09:16

Just googled and the only cases of people OD'ing on Vit D with any harmful effect involved people taking over 1000mcg a day so I'd think 25mcg should be pretty safe!

Do anyone know of a pregnancy vitamin WITHOUT iron. I was taking Pregnacare Max and it made me so constipated I ended up in hospital! But I'm concerned my baby isn't getting everything it needs from me because my appetite and been so badly affected getting pregnant.

Please help if you can?Confused it's my first child and I'm a bit clueless!

Oysterbabe · 16/11/2017 07:32

You only need to take folic acid and vitamin D so just takes those separately.

thepatchworkcat · 16/11/2017 10:23

I just take folic acid (but I’m on a prescription only high dose due to some other medication) and vit d separately plus I sometimes have spatone in fruit juice for iron (but I do that anyway when not pregnant). Don’t panic too much about your appetite/diet - I had bad sickness in my first pregnancy and lived on crisps and fizzy drinks for a few weeks as it was all I could get down - baby was just fine, big and healthy and still is now at nearly 5. Currently in a similar sicky pregnancy and not stressing too much about my diet of toast, pasta and coke! Just eat what can.

thepatchworkcat · 16/11/2017 10:24

That’s to Mazzamazuki by the way

My midwife gave me a bottle of the free NHS healthy start ones at booking in (I think some areas you have to be low income to get them but she just put them in my bounty pack no questions asked!).

They are only Folic Acid/Vit D/Vit C, so I presume they are your main ones to go for - worth asking about maybe? I think you can also buy them pretty cheap at my Drs.

Also, tesco ones do have iron in as they are now what I'm taking.
