Im going to post this in pregnancy aswell but there is more traffic here;

This is way tmi...

Ive had horrific constipation with this pregnancy since the start after taking pregnacare, so much so i was hospitalized after taking senna which dehydrated me badly.

So, for the last 2 weeks i have been really constipated in a lot of pain but have managed a few small movements along the way also taking movical

this morning i managed to go, then all day i have had the feeling of needing to go which i have been (great) however all day i have been in horrific pain in my bowel i pressume

just taken.paracetamol, the pain is so bad i can't get comfy to sleep, midwife say 'just rest and take paracetamol, if there is blood call back'

im in agony, have my bowels erupted? baby is moving fine, the kicks are actually quite hurting my delicate insides.

I think you'd know if your bowels had erupted?! There would be a fair amount of blood.

Ive had horrific constipation throughout (am now nearly 34 weeks) and on the advice of the mw take lactulose and it's helped me so much!!! I'm still not great, but everything is softer and I feel less full (apart from full of baby!!) I'm also on iron etc.

I drink lots, exercise etc but still didn't manage to prevent it happening.

Hopefully the pain is everything moving and creating space. If it's still bad, just go to your drs and get checked!

Hope you're ok!!

Similar here. No advice really. I stopped taking the pregnacare. It's the iron that bungs you up. I didn't take any last time and my iron levels were fine. I do find walking and drinking lots helps too. I take up to 5 movicol sachets a day to keep things on the move.

Suffered with this amongst other things during last pregnancy so you have my every sympathy. Are you sure you don't perhaps have haemorrhoids / piles? This is quite common and made worse with constipation and straining to go to the loo. Have a look using some mirrors. Best advice is of course to go to the GP and get everything checked professionally!

Weepo · 18/09/2012 10:40

I had a fair bit of constipation from about 15-25 weeks (now 33). It is really uncomfortable and I sympathise greatly. I can recall times when I couldn't think straight due to the pain.

Loads of water and Lactulose worked. I have kept up the fluids and I also go for a massive bowl of fibre rich cereal every morning. I also bought a stool to put my feet on when on the loo. This really helped with the discomfort I experienced when I managed to go.

As per horseylady's advice, if it is really unbearable, get the Dr to check it out.

SkinnyMarinkADink · 18/09/2012 15:04

Hello and thank you for responses.

I went back to the DR'S this morning and got given some anti biotics for my very painful water infection.

He also said to keep on top of movical, im going to take 2 a day and hopefully that will help. the word lactoluse makes me shiver cant stand it.

Get well soon!! Lactulose is seriously my best friend!!! My bowels are such a mess without it. Just horrendous!! Tastes foul but I'm used to it now :( can't wait to be able to go without assistance!!

SkinnyMarinkADink · 18/09/2012 16:28

It makes me horribly sick which then makes me dehydrated its a vicious circle.

So sorry you are suffering like this. It must be awful.

The only thing I can think of is change your diet a bit - avoid anyting like wholewheat, which absorbs loads of water and makes it harder to go, dehydrates you etc. and try to have a lot of fruit and veg as it's a different sort of fibre that won't pull all the water out of your system.

Oats are also good,
and obviously drinking as much fluid as you can manage.

With any luck you shouldn't need to medicate very much if everything you're eating is so easy to process - iyswim?

And if you're still taking iron, stop it now - and take something liquid like Spatone which doesn't have this effect.

Thinking of you.

EdMcDunnough · 18/09/2012 16:40

Oh and definitely don't start eating high fibre cereals like bran and so on, you need soluble, not insoluble fibre.

Insoluble is the sort that bulks up and takes a lot of water to be soft. If you're nt drinking loads then it will just make everything harder.

forpitysake · 18/09/2012 17:48

I'm really suffering too, but only in the last few weeks (im just over 31wks now).
This is my 2nd pregnancy and I dont remember anything like this last time round. I've stopped taking the pregnacare now.
MW recommended spatone and I've got some, but havent taken any yet so cant vouch for it not bunging up everything. I thought I'd wait and make sure I'm all back to normal before introducing it.
I forgot about AllBran being insoluble fibre and not soluble and I had a bowl of it this morning bloomin' wish I hadn't now...

You have my full sympathies OP!

Hopefully it helps that you're not on your own!
I've not had a decent night's sleep for ages now. Partly cos of baby getting bigger etc, but since this has started I've been up at least 3 or 4 times overnight every night since Sunday. I think the last time I went 'properly' must have been about Thursday Blush.
DH has been really good (despite secretly finding it a little bit funny I think Hmm ) and he has taken DD to school etc cos I feel if I walk anywhere I'm going to poo myself

Runningblue · 19/09/2012 07:23

Your bowel might not have erupted - like last poster said, I'm sure you'd be keeled over and suffering big blood loss.
However, I wonder if you might have an inpaction of the bowel. It is quite possible to be doing 'little bits' of poo or bypass diarrhoea when little bits get past the inpaction.
I really feel for you, I have had constipation-extremis in normal life and in pregnancy- joy...
I'd go to docs rather than midwife, having thought very carefully when you last did a proper bowel movement as opposed to little bits.
In my first preg, I went to the doc in this situation realised it had been about 4 weeks.. Eek! Good luck x

Runningblue · 19/09/2012 07:54

Sorry now seen you've been to doc- not reading the thread carefully enough! Do keep track of your bowel movements tho, if you need to go back for a repeat visit, you'll be equipped!
