Im 36 weeks pregnant, and have put on 4 stone during pregnancy Blush

I do admittedly eat alot of cake, sweets, crisps etc.

Does this mean i ll have a big baby?

My calorie intake is over what it should be Blush

No, not unless you have gestational diabetes or another metabolic disorder. Your body produces insulin to store the excess energy as fat in your body so your baby isn't exposed to higher blood sugar itself, and therefore wouldn't lay down extra fat. It's only when this process is disturbed (for example in diabetes, where the mother's blood sugar rises and therefore so does the baby's) that the baby can gain excessive weight.

I have no idea. I had hyperemesis during my pregnancy, lost a couple of stone in the first 8 weeks. Was still throwing up during the induction, was warned to expect small baby. DD popped out at 9lb 2 Shock

lackingNameChangeInspiration · 17/09/2012 15:24

I put on the same with no1 and he was average sized

Revelsarethebest · 17/09/2012 15:24

I havent got GD.

How come some babies are much bigger than others?

Two of my friends have had babies at full term, one was 7lb, the other 9lb 2oz

Why is this?

Genetics, variations in blood sugar control, variations in placental efficiency (naturally occurring and also influenced by smoking, caffeine intake etc), ethnicity, gestation at birth. There are lots of reasons, most of which are outside the mother's control. The main thing is that a healthy baby will be roughly equivalent on the centiles for length, weight and head circumference, ie in proportion.

terilou87 · 17/09/2012 18:51

my friend has no medical reasons other than genetics and her children were all over 10lb there's loads of reasons why you can have big children i put on roughly 3 stone with 1st and i hardly ate anything other than magnum ice cream and he was 8lb1 then 2nd i put on around 4st she was 7lb 7 then 3rd i put around the same on she was 7lb 3 this time i havn't put any weight on yet but was over weight when i fell pregnant so i have maintained same weight throughout but my belly is huge im expecting him to be around 8lb again but we shall see.

I have never been given a reason as to why dd was so large (10 lb 1 oz). She was 13 days overdue which obviously has something to do with it, but even allowing for that she'd have been big.

My personal opinion is that it was a very efficient placenta. I ate normally, I'm average height and slim build, I gained 2 3/4 stone (normal-ish), I didn't have GD. Not sure what else it could have been!

DD spent the first year 'growing down' into her true height/weight. She is now exactly on the 50th centile for both at 3.5 yrs (99th centile at birth Grin!)

I've lost weight, my baby is due in a week and according to growth scans will be 9lb+

Badgerina · 17/09/2012 22:37

Genetics innit Grin Why are some adults bigger than others? Why do some people have blue eyes and some brown?

carrielou2007 · 18/09/2012 06:31

I'm tall and size 12 and put on three stone Blushwith dd 9 lb 6 and three and a half stone BlushBlushwith ds told he'd be over 10lb was only 8lb 13!!

Both times lost it all us extra 3/4 stone to take to to size 1o after though went back to size 12 after finishing gf (when I could have wine again Grin)

My friend is a big girl, size 28 and both her dc were 6lb odd. I do like to eat naughty thing when pregnant as know the weight will come off easily again but I eat it as extra treats along with a healthy diet ifyswim.

I don't worry about it (not had gd) even though am getting to a ripe old age with this one if I want it I eat it Grin

carrielou2007 · 18/09/2012 06:32

Excuse typos am in hospital having had second eye op yesterday so can't quite see silly autocorrects Blush

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 18/09/2012 06:37

Don't think it makes a difference

You still might have a tiny baby

I hardly put any weight on (about a stone and a half) with ds1 he was 7lb 13
Same with ds2 he was 8lb 8

Think it depends on your metabolism, genetics, placenta.

BrandyAlexander · 18/09/2012 07:04

I put on about 1.5 stone each time and had 7lb babies. First time, everyone crapped on about how I hadn't put on enough weight Hmm, second time round I ignored them. My friend who was something like a size 4 (UK), put on about 2.5 stone (again normal) and then whipped out a 10lb baby!

SpottyTeacakes · 18/09/2012 07:07

Dd was 8lb FOUR WEEKS EARLY! Grin I am diabetic though. I didn't put on much weight though, maybe a stone and a half I think? Bump only, couldn't tell I was pregnant from behind apart from the waddle

bangersmashandbeans · 18/09/2012 07:09

I put on nearly 5 stone (more than half my original weight!!) and had a 5lb 11oz teeny girl!
