Swinging???

I'm 30+3. Saw the midwife today and when she was listening to the baby's heartbeat she asked if I knew whether it is a boy or girl. Said I don't but even though I didn't find out I'm still really curious.

Asked her why she'd asked and she said 'the baby's swinging'! Asked her what she meant and she said 'the baby's a swinger'! Didn't have the guts to ask what that meant lol.

I'm assuming she was referring to the heartbeat as she was listening to it at the time. Does anyone know what this means? xx

I guess that she was referring to the bpm as some believe that boys and girls have different heart rates. So a boys is slower 140 bpm. By swinging I guess she meant that it wasn't at all clear which one your baby was? Maybe?

Gosh, literally never heard that before! This is my 1st baby that's got this far though so maybe some more experienced mums might know. The only reference to swinging I've ever come across re gender is the old wives' tale of swinging a wedding ring on a chain over your tummy, and I assume the midwife wasnt doing that?!

As an aside, don't feel worried about asking what it means. Midwives shouldn't use jargon, just like in any other industry. I always make a point of asking if I'm not 100% sure because I think they sometimes do forget that they know way more about babies! Eg a midwife asked if I'd been booked in for a GTT and I did know what it was because I have been booked in for one, but it's entirely possible that I would have had no idea what she meant so I think she shouldn't really have used the abbreviation.

I thought that too about her trying to work out the sex by the heartbeat. Looks like this baby is going to keep everyone guessing!

I know I should've asked her what she meant but I'm rubbish at stuff like that! Need to start doing it though. This is my 2nd and I'd never heard it before either xx

I've never heard of that before!

maybe the slower heartbeats sound more swingey like "swoosh swoosh" and the faster ones sound more "boom boom boom" IYKWIM"

Confused not sure if that sentance makes any sense at all! LOL

Disappointed BTW, thought this thread would be about wife swapping!

Lol! I did nearly come out with something like that when the midwife said it but thought it might be a bit inappropriate Grin xx
