Last night i had the worst pain behind my ribs, to point i nearly cried (and i never cry) I think it was trapped wind, but i ended up nearly fainting and getting myself so worked up, i feel OKish today but still a bit sore. Baby has been moving (i'm 30 weeks) so i am assuming he's OK. Wonder if i should bother the midwife or get on with it?

I think this is probably within the realms of normal, though I know how much it can hurt Sad

It could be costochondritis or whatever it's called - where your ribs get sore as they are pushed apart? I'm not sure. Or it could have been wind, or in a more wild suggestion it could have been something like gallstones - but given that you're 30 weeks it is probably just pregnancy related.

Hope you are ok. If it happens again, then ring midwife and ask, or maybe call in at GP just to be safe.

I feel for you! I have had this, it was worse at about 28-32 weeks. (Plenty of different aches and pains now!) It almost made me cry at times and lose my breath.

Mine would be on the left side and sometimes both front and back of my ribcage. However, it did ease with paracetamol and a lie down. Mine was more in the evening I seemed to get it after I had eaten a lot.

Midwife said it was because of ribcage expanding but I don't understand why it was only one side. Maybe because stomach is on the left and pushed up under ribcage therefore eating a lot makes it push on ribs? I dunno.

I would ask your midwife but I hope it gets better for you and doesn't keep coming back. If you are in doubt about anything like that do get it checked!

I had this on the right with Ds but I think it was his bum pushing into me, it was excrutiating and usually happened whilst on the motorway driving to work! This was an intermittent pain though and stretching myself up whilst standing relieved the pain.

You should definitely mention it to your midwife - upper epigastric pain can be a sign of pre-eclampsia so always best to get it checked out to rule it out.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 19/09/2012 23:18

Yes def get checked out. Especially if it was upper right side as that could be gall bladder or liver which could be serious.

I agree with what Rainbowbabyhope says above - it's listed as a symptom of pre eclampsia so call your midwife or GP today.

SloeFarSloeGood · 20/09/2012 07:29

You should have your bp checked ASAP. Rib pain is sign of pre eclampsia.

I had a similar problem. It was so extreme I ended up being transported by ambulance to hospital twice as I couldn't move.

Turns out baby had feet pushed into bottom of my stomach causing it not to drain properly, causing gas and liquid build up. My stomach would swell and press against my ribs making it excruciating.

Was given pro-kinetics to help move food more easily and high dose painkillers!

You must get checked out though.

Spice17 · 20/09/2012 11:16

Was going to say is an indicator of pre eclampsia, didn't know that until I was in A&E last night and they kept asking me about it! (all OK)

HaveALittleFaith · 20/09/2012 17:18

I had something similar with the pain radiating from my back - I have a UTI tracking up to my kidney. I had no typical UTI symptoms.

I'd get checked out, just for reassurance.
