Today I've been getting some dark brown blood. I'm 38 weeks +1 and have been having strong painful contractions every hour or so for the last few days. I know show is supposed to be pinkish and thick; this blood is thin and brown (a bit like the end of a period). I don't have any particular abdominal pain (just back and pelvic) and baby is moving as normal. Has anyone had this sort of thing?

Marsup - I think the show is more mucus like and pink. I think you should phone your midwife to get it checked out.
My Mum had bleeding late in her 4th pregnancy. She was in early labour, but they speeded things up as it can be an indicator of potential problems. My brother was born 3 hrs later and absolutley fine!

Worth getting checked out though just incase. Good luck!

Hi Marsup - it's me tinyfeet. Sorry - no advice here, but I had a thick whitish discharge yesterday - I'm at 40 wks. Mears said it sounds like show. I'm sure someone will answer your question soon. Good luck! Maybe you'll go early!

SenoraPostrophe · 23/12/2003 13:57

eeek, don't say that mistletoes - so did I!

Marsup - good luck. Definatley phone your midwife as I also gave birth v sharpish after having a bit of brown blood last time. Have no idea whether it's a show or not, but all the same.

MincePie · 23/12/2003 14:23

Hi Marsup...my show with my second was FULL of dark brown blood and only a bit of mucus. Get it checked out, but it certainly could be a show. Good luck!

boozysoozywong · 23/12/2003 14:26

My show with second was like an enormouse peeled black grape and came out 17 days before.
Sounds like something is happening, should call your midwife

mistletoes · 23/12/2003 14:30

Boozy - yuck! 17 days! So it really could still be a while then after show. . .

GladTidings · 23/12/2003 14:31

Oh boozy!! What a description.
But 17 days later..... my goodness that must've been frustrating!

boozysoozywong · 23/12/2003 14:39

the odd thing was DS1 had eaten grapes for breakfast, and yhis plug/show actually fellout on to the floor, I thought it was one that he'd dropped ... until i took a closer look.

MincePie · 23/12/2003 14:41

PMSL SUZY!

GladTidings · 23/12/2003 14:43

Oh Boozy.... I won't ask why you didn't have any pants on!

mistletoes · 23/12/2003 15:04

ROFL, Boozy! And I'm at work. . . Must look busy. . . Right.

marsup · 23/12/2003 16:49

Boozysuzy! a peeled black grape! and I thought my post was unappetizing!

Once again mumsnet has demonstrated that the world is more varied than 'What to expect when you're expecting' suggests. Anyway I rang the antenatal section of the hospital and they thought it might be show. I'm seeing my m'wife tomorrow so I can see what she thinks. Now I've started getting contractions every 10-13 minutes so I almost believe this is it! (except that I had the same thing for 2 hours on sunday and then it stopped )

Good luck Marsup! Will be looking for your posts. No contractions here, so it looks like you'll go first. . .

marsup · 24/12/2003 17:25

A bit of drama yesterday evening and a lot of disappointment today... my contractions were so strong and so close together yesterday evening that I couldn't sleep, so got up to have a shower at 1.30 and discovered that my brownish 'show' had turned to fresh red. I rang the hospital and ended up being monitored there for an hour until after 3 a.m., then they decided they wanted to keep me in just in case although it all looked ok and was probably just a lot of very bloody show. Nasty 8-minute contractions so I did a lot of heavy breathing and not much sleeping; I had quite a lot of bleeding during the night but none then during the day - I have only just got home now on the promise that at the slightest sign of red I will call them. I have no abdominal pains, baby seems well, etc so it is unlikely to be placenta abrupta (sp?) and the consultant said he was sure it was just bloody show (thin and abundant...). However no one looked completely sure about that. The bad news for me is that my contractions are really painful now and I'm only 1 cm dilated We were quite reconciled to the idea of a Christmas birth and now it looks like being days of rocking myself to and fro in various positions instead. Is anyone else out there in pre-labour over Christmas??!! I do hope this isn't going to last for a week!

Oh Marsup! Sounds miserable! Lots of cyberhugs -and hope it happens soon! I have just been having my BHicks - not painful, just occasionally uncomfortable, and becoming a bit more frequent. Had some non-bloody show earlier this week, but just mucous really, I think. Now, it's like I don't even feel like I'm in my 40th week! Sounds as though you will just be uncomfortable for a little while, but that all is generally ok. I hope so. Don't know what else to say!

mistletoes · 24/12/2003 17:36

By the way, I'm also only 1 cm - as of last week. Also, did I already say that I'm tiny feet. Hoping you can enjoy Christmas without too much discomfort.

Marsup & Mistletoes - Any birth announcements yet??

pie · 31/12/2003 10:19

GT...have a look at Birth Announcments

mistletoes · 31/12/2003 14:40

Hi Pie and M2t (GT) - I'm still around - going crazy. Doctor wants to schedule to be induced next week. Marsup had her little marsupial. I think I'm the only one who is way overdue atm. Drinking lots of raspberry tea on MN suggestions. . . Don't know what else to do.

GladTidings · 02/01/2004 09:36

Pie - I realised that the minute I had posted that message. Oops!

Mistletoes - How frustrating..... it'll be over soon. Raspberry tea certainly worked for me, as did lots of walking around. Good luck.

mistletoes · 02/01/2004 09:45

Hi GT, still here. Yes, frustrating - can't figure out how to speed up. Trying to go about life without thinking about it, but it's hard to try to pretend that I'm not about to give birth any moment now.

GladTidings · 02/01/2004 09:47

Try some bouncing about.

And I know its probably the last thing on your mind but what about trying to start things off with sex.

mistletoes · 02/01/2004 09:52

GT, well I could start a whole thread on the sex issue. DH doesn't seem vaguely interested now, despite his interest over the past couple of months. Now when I'm suggesting it, he'll have nothing of it! I can't figure him out.

GladTidings · 02/01/2004 09:55

He maybe doesn't like the idea of being a labour inducing tool

Perhaps he has this weird idea that your contractions will start immediatley and he'll get stuck..... or something.

Have you asked him why? Does he know it could help bring on your labour and he'd be doing it for the family??

mistletoes · 02/01/2004 18:55

Hi GT, had to log off earlier. Dh does know why I would want to have sex - but he doesn't like to talk about it, so we'll just have to see what happens. . .
