If your breech baby turned, would you know about it?

Or might they be able to do it without you realising?

Just wondered - I'm 34 weeks and DS2 has a fortnight to turn before the doctors decide what to do about him being breech.

I felt my baby try to
Move several times it was really painful too :( she never quite made it though , would always fall back round. She was transverse though not breech although was breech on many occasion .

My DD turned at around 38 weeks. I was due to go in to see if they could turn her. I felt a lot of movement the night before I went in and at the scan the next day, she was head down. It was however a surprise to me that she had turned by herself. The opnly time I could think of that she must of turned was the night before as there was so much movement. Also there was less pressure at the top on my bump, her head had been stuck up at the top and it was stretching the skin and sore.

Mine was stuck in my heart shaped uterus and I could definitely tell when he was trying to turn. He just never managed it.

Maybe I could feel it so much because of the distorted shape though.

Why only a fortnight?
Mine was breech and the midwife didn't worry til I was 39 wks, she said they can turn at anytime. Mine did turn and I definitely felt it, it was the strangest most uncomfortable feeling, at first I thought something was wrong then when I had my scan the next day she had turned.

I felt and saw DS3 turn at 28 weeks. I was watching One Born Every Minute (yes really!) half lying down on my back on the bed, and the bump started moving about a lot. The bum part of the bump started to move to the side, then eventually down to the bottom. It took about 30 minutes in total, didn't hurt but was quite intense moving.

I felt my dd turn at 36 weeks Ish! Had my heart set on a home birth so gave it some welly jumping around in aqua natal! She was going crazy that week and I am pretty sure she moved then!

montysma1 · 16/09/2012 22:45

I had to have a lot of growth scans for various reasons and was scanned practically evey week from about 30 weeks. Honestly, one week she was breach, one week she wasnt, next week she was etc etc etc. She must have been turning sumersaults and i felt precisely NOTHING. Infact, I felt so little from her most of the time that I went in once worried about reduced movements, and she was wriggling away.

Day before section, she was breach. Next day, when they were actually getting her out, she was the right way round. but so far up into my abdomen they had to grab her with forceps. That explained my terrible breathlessness.

But honestly I didnt feel a thing during all the turning over she must have been doing .

Also, she had typical breach baby legs apparently, so even though she shifted, and was the right way up at birth ,she must have spent a lot of her time breach.

THere legs are tucked away up on their chest as thats how they have held them in the breach postion and they just dont want to drop them down once they are born. So it makes them look tiny as you cant see their legs and its hard to get sleep suits on. If it happens dont worry, she dropped them down by the time she was about 3 weeks old and now has normal legs! We were sent ffor a hip scan at 10 weeks though. They do this with all breach babies as apparently, if they are breach after i think it was 37 weeks, they are at slightly more risk of hip displasia, so were sent automatically for a hip ultrasound.

Mine turned at maybe 37-38 weeks and it really hurt -- I had to lie on my side and thought about going to hospital, but it passed fairly soon and movements were normal. I didn't know that's what it was but at my next appointment she was no longer breech, so we just assume that's when she turned.

In the 40th week she turned again (from head down to breech) and that I didn't feel. Luckily they scanned me one last time the moment before they induced me, so had ELCS the next morning.

Ds2 turned at 36 weeks. I had no idea.

Goldrill · 17/09/2012 13:20

Mine went from transverse to head down last weekend (35 weeksish). I didn't feel her move but I think it was overnight as I slept badly and then woke up and couldn't walk properly, and my bump's a different shape now (freaky!). MW confirmed she's now head down last week, so I hope she stays that way!

weaselm4 · 17/09/2012 13:25

I don't know for sure that my daughter was breech, an experienced midwife couldn't work out which way round she was, so sent me for a scan on my due date.

The day before that she moved so drastically (and painfully!) that I had to call MIL to look after DS!

By the time we got to the scan, she was nicely head down. But she was always VERY mobile and I could always feel her!

slothprincess · 17/09/2012 13:30

My DD turned herself at 36 weeks the day before I was due to have the appointment for the hospital to attempt to turn her. We still went to the appointment as, although I'd felt a lot of strange and vigorous movements the day before while I'd be christmas shopping, I hadn't realised that's what it was! A scan confirmed that she had turned :)

DesperatelySeekingDistraction · 17/09/2012 13:46

I think you'll feel it of baby turns.

One of my earliest memories (I was 2yrs 9m) is sitting on the lid of the toilet seat, chatting away to my poor mum who was having a bath and trying to get a bit of peace in the latter stages of her pregnancy with my DB. All of a sudden, she gripped the sides of the bath and gasped as DB did the 180 degree turn he needed to get head down. I can remember seeing this lump in her bump move around and thinking it was brilliant!

When I was in latter stages of pregnancy with DD1 she wasn't breech, she was engaged and in a perfect position but when in labour, after a particularly strong contraction, she turned around to back-to-back position. I thought she'd just moved to get more comfortable, however after an hour of pushing at hospital with no progress it all made sense when a more experienced midwife checked DD1's position and declared "back-to back" (I had told them about the strange big movement when I first arrived at hospital but they didn't think it was important)

Fingers crossed baby moves into the right position for you.

AngelDog · 19/09/2012 12:20

Thanks, everyone - I'm guessing he's probably still breech then, as I've not felt anything too violent.

The consultant said that if he hadn't turned by 36 weeks I'd have to go and see the consultant team - presumably to decide whether to try to manipulate him round or not.

Must pump up my birthing ball!

My dd3 was breech most of the way through pg, towards the end she flipped around constantly, sometimes I felt it and sometimes I didn't.

I was booked in for a section at 39 weeks, the day before the op she was breech but when I was scanned prior to the op she had moved without me noticing and so I was sent home.

Had to attend hospital daily after that for pre-eclampsia monitoring, and she flipped again back to breech at 39+2, which I felt and was confirmed by scan.

I was then booked in for ECV at 39+4 and she flipped to head down on the morning of the appointment - which I didn't feel.

Consultant then ordered induction, as they were concerned that the constant turning would lead to the cord getting wrapped around etc. Induction was postponed over 3 days, due to the number of people coming into the ward labouring naturally - it was almost so unbelievable as to be funny. I wasn't allowed to be induced unless there were certain staff availability too, due to shoulder dystocia with dd2, so was stuck on the labour ward all that time.

DD3 eventually got fed up of waiting and decided to make an appearance without any help on her due date - little madam.

It's worth noting she was 9lb 4.5oz and I still didn't feel her moving each time towards the end, even 3 days before she was born.

CaptainHetty · 19/09/2012 12:35

This one was breech til nearly 37 weeks then she turned. I didn't have a clue she'd done it.
