So I'm waiting to find out if I'm pregnant.. period is due soon.

I have just managed to split a glow stick (accidental) and got the fluid on my hands. I instantly washed my hand. I just wanted to know if it was toxic and if I do get a positive could it have some ill effect on the baby? Not sure what kind of chemicals go into those things but can't be great as the stuff glows up!

Thanks

you washed your hands.. stop being silly and panicking... :)

GOLDdebka · 15/09/2012 13:43

My DH used to drink those things- apparently it makes your wee glow in the dark. So they can't be that toxic! I think you'll be fine.

Good luck for your BFP :)

Haha I know I felt stupid as I was writing it but thought it was worth an ask just to check..

As long as you didn't ingest any of the fluid I am sure you will be fine. Smile

Thumbwitch · 15/09/2012 13:44

Pretty sure you'll be absolutely fine. It's not going to be the old-fashioned phosphorus, which might have been absorbed by your skin (and you'd still need a lot of it to reach a toxic level), because they are quite easily broken and children play with them.
You haven't swallowed it so it's not going to get into your system easily, and you've washed it off quite quickly.

I'd say it's about as dangerous as fluorescent highlighters - i.e. not.

PooPooOnMars · 15/09/2012 13:44

One of my pets ate one and throthed at the mouth. They were fine though. (realise that doesn't really help!)

ThisOnce · 15/09/2012 13:45

I'm sure it's fine but even if it wasn't (which it is!) at this stage you have a tiny bundle of cells travelling through your body aiming to attach to the inside if your uterus. So, not even likely in contact with any part of your body to be able to be in contact with chemicals.

Anyway, that would be such a small amount that would likely not get anywhere near a growing baby. Good luck with testing :)

Loads of info on the internet....

"Are glow sticks safe?"

"The liquid light source is non-toxic, no heat or harmful radiation is produced. Contact with the eyes or ingesting of the fluid should be avoided, as irritation will result. There is also the possibility of allergic reaction, please keep in mind that under normal use you will never come in contact with the fluid."

Thistledew · 15/09/2012 13:46

Well, you probably won't need to go for a scan because your baby will be glowing so much you will be able to see it through your abdomen! Wink

Of course not. I am quite sure that you are not the first person in the world to break one and I am also sure that the manufacturers would not risk the lawsuits of putting lethal substances in it. It is not radioactive.

Thank you :)

A baby that glowed in the dark would be quite handy for those night feeds...only joking.
there is nothing to worry about, good luck with your result! :)

Softlysoftly · 15/09/2012 13:51

perfectly safe

But at your 90's rave avoid overindulging on the whizz and Vera's.

I assume that's why you have a glow stick?

Viviennemary · 15/09/2012 13:53

I hardly think they would be allowed to use dangerous fluid in these things. Stop worrying. I am worrier so I sympathise!

KatMumsnet · 15/09/2012 14:40

Hi there, we're going to move this into Pregnancy, as it's not really an AIBU and we think it might be helpful for others who are pregnant.

Good luck with the testing OP Thanks
