I'm feeling sorry for myself, thought I was having a pleasant enough low risk pregnancy, now really worried about every single thing I eat and worried I'm harming myself and baby.

I'm nearly 34 weeks, midwife at former hospital recommended GTT asap at 31 week appt because of high glucose in urine twice in row, but because of moving house/moving hospitals the new hospital has only just fitted me in for GTT, later in pregnancy than they'd usually prefer to do - I'll be 34+1 and GTT is not as effective then apparently. Can anyone offer any reassurance? Just feel so down right now.

I feel EXACTLY the same. I'm 35 weeks and have been for a growth scan today which has confirmed baby is large. I have to go next weds for diabetes test so I don't have it confirmed yet, but I keep swinging between wanting many out so I know he's ok and panicking about giving birth to a whopper. Have cried for last threes hours since getting in from hospital and feel like even if test shows I have diabetes I'm so far along that there's not a lot I can do about it at this point anyway. Sorry I'm not offering you the big motivational speech- but maybe we could blub together?!

Baby, not many. Stupid stupid telephone.

A GTT is normally done for certain categories of pregnant ladies at 28 weeks - but can be done later based on clinical need. So don't worry about that. And a diagnosis of GDM is a diagnosis, no matter what stage of pregnancy. Plus there is a LOT that can be done to treat it, between diet, tablets & insulin.

Hoping your test goes well

Thanks cheese :)

Not saying I've been neglected at all, or that I've lost hope- whatever the hospital say I'll do. But it does feel late on compared to some other ladies I've read about on here.

Yeah, it's got me really down today too, citrusy. I just feel like I wish I'd known sooner (presuming I have GD). They found high glucose at 28 w so could've had GTT sooner... Now I've got the weekend worrying about everything I'm eating and whether I'm making myself unwell..

Have you checked out this GD thread? I got a late diagnosis (seemed to start at 30-31 weeks, diagnosed at 33 weeks, started finger-pricking and blood monitoring at 34 weeks) and started thread to get info because it took a couple of weeks after that to get any dietary advice. I found trial and error helped with food and some great tips on the thread from people who have been there.

My advice is even if you suspect you might have GD cut out sugars and white carbs NOW. My bloods were so good at first on sensible food I thought the hospital had made a mistake - until I had 2 inches of orange juice which sent my sugars mad. Even 2 bites of DH's banoffee or half a biscuit last night sent my sugars high whereas if I avoid anything sugary and white bread / pasta / rice my bloods are good. After growing 1lb a week in undiagnosed period baby is now growing a normal 0.5lb a week and I feel really healthy and well, controlling with diet alone. I'm 37 weeks today and having CS at 38+4 so the end is in sight.

Good luck and be proactive - you'll be so glad you were :) Thanks

Thank you Angelico, that was a really thoughtful reply - I'll take a look at that thread too. Smile

I absolutely agree with Angelico that if you are worried this might be the result, cut out sugar and refined carbs now. There's no downside as this is much healthier for you anyway!
