Complete previa. Bit scared and clueless.

I was told i had complete placenta previa at my 20 week scan. i'm now 25 weeks. I saw my midwife Monday who said with complete previa the chances of it moving enough for a vaginal birth are very very slim. She said she has never witnessed it happening. She also said i will have a scan at 32 weeks which will be the decider on whats happening but i should be prepared to be in hospital from 34 weeks and have a section at 39.

If it's best for me and baby then that's of course what i'll do but i cant help feeling so clueless, helpless and a bit scared tbh. I will have to leave 4 yr old DD and DH before xmas to be in hosp. Do i say to work i am going to finish at 32 weeks so we all know where we stand or play or play it by ear till i know.

Just struggling with the not knowing. Anyone had complete previa who can help? Aslo how long after a section will i be kept in?

At my 20 week scan I was told that my placenta totally covered my cervix but was told that this was fine by the sonographer and my midwife. I was also told that I'd have a scan at 32/34 weeks, however, my scan date has come through at 36 weeks!

I'm thinking that it's obviously nothing to worry about (unless I bleed between now and then) otherwise they would have booked me in earlier!

A friend of mine wasn't told at her 20 week scan that she had complete coverage - she only found out when they told her at her 36 week scan that it had moved! (she went on the have a vaginal birth)

Don't know how much help I've been here but I'm sure that I've read somewhere too that 9 out of 10 move on their own and a vaginal birth can go ahead.

I had placenta preavia stage 4 which I take to mean complete coverage. This was discovered at 30weeks when I had contractions. I was signed off and they initially wanted me to stay at hospital from then but I refused.

They Agreed to let me stay home. I thankfully didn't bleed. I had him via csection at 39 weeks. Weighing 8 pounds. It was all fine.

I went on to have a vaginal delivery the second time round.

It's not bad! Really!

Just to say I also had complete placenta previa at my 20 week scan and had little hope of it moving after reading up online but was rescanned at 32 weeks and the placenta had moved clear - so just wanted to reassure you that it does happen, even with a complete previa Smile Hope the same happens for you.

I have a placenta that has moved towards my cervix as the pregnancy has continued but my obstetrician didn't seem concerned at all. Just said to watch out for bleeding, but said it in a "it probably won't happen" way.

Am also being rescanned later (I'm 27 weeks).

From what I've read though it's only if you have a bleed that they want you in hospital.

Hi, it hasn't actually happened to me but I was in hospital with a placenta previa lady at 38 weeks admitted just incase she went into labour. She had an elec c sec and had the easiest time of all of the resident ladies! Baby fine, looked like she could run a marathon afterwards.

foxylady123 · 14/09/2012 09:29

Great to hear that it may move. That's why they want me in also newby2 incase i go in to labour or bleed! I'll do whatever is best for baby but i guess i just feel so out of control and powerless it's a little scary. Think i'll try and put it out of my mind now. I have a consultant app. nxt week so am really hoping he decides to scan me and i may know abit more.

Thanks everyone.

Having an ELCS is not that bad and shouldn't be seen as faliure. Not the same but my sister was hospitalised with her 3rd just before xmas last year and did all her shopping via the internet and got it delivered home.

I am having an ELCS on 20th September and I am actually looking forward to it more than I wa sthe birth with DS1 firstly because I actually have an end date and secondly because I know exactly whats going to happen and when. This is a huge improvement over DS1 where it was all rushed and turned into an EMCS.

Hi I had elcs 4 weeks ago due to complete previa and it was fine! A lovely way to give birth (but then I never fancied labour much!). It is a bit scary getting to that point, I had 5 bleeds from 29 wks onwards and a spell in hospital each time, so needless to say had to finish work earlier than planned, and with the last bleed at 36 wks they said I had to stay in hospital and they delivered him at 37+5. he was 6lb and perfect and I'm recovering really well. The main problem was life upheaval due to so much time in hospital but it's the safest place and that's the main thing - I know it's frustrating.

Hi just wanted to say I am in a similar situation - just found out at the 20 week scan last week that I have a partial posterior praevia, and although they have booked me in for a scan at 34 weeks, I feel like I'm in limbo until then.
I'm really anxious about how much exercise/work I should be doing (I'm a self-employed childminder), and if that's going to increase my risk of bleeding. I am in the same position as don't want to leave my 4yr old DD over Christmas if I have to go into hospital, so anything I can do to reduce the chances of bleeding, I want to try to do.

I'm in the same boat, placenta is completely covering the os on the 20 week scan - I'm now finishing work at 34 weeks, originally I'd planned to finish at 37 wks. Am getting a scan at 36 weeks. I feel completely in limbo too & it's pretty scary! I'm 22 weeks at the moment and would rather decide on an ELCS now, than have to wait for the 36 week scan.

I have a 6 year old and am concerned if I have to spend any time in hospital, especially as my husband works shifts so childcare will be really difficult.

foxylady123 · 16/09/2012 08:59

Jasbro i'm a nursery nurse it's so hard to know whats too much. I have said i won't do nappies or lift probably abit too cautious but if it helps.
It's the limbo part i hate i would just rather know what's happening so my family and me can plan. I have heard some hospitals will let you out during the day sort of day release? not sure if this is 100% true.
I think i'm going to say i'll finish at 34 wks too then at least i know something is for definite.
Good luck all hope our troublesome placentas move.
