I'm really annoyed. 11+2 with dc 5, have first scannext week which I only found our about on tuesday. It was scheduled for a work day so tried to re schedule as am pt, only to find they don't do them any other day.

So, emailed boss requesting time off for non specific hospital appt, was told to take half a day of al. Now, half a day is very bloody inconvenient but don't want to tell him am pg. yet as have history of mmc. Do ask to take whole day off as al as at least that makes it worthwhile. He says no. not convenient for company. Shall I just tell him?

I think I would just tell him and ask him to keep it quiet. I've a history of MMC and always ended up telling work manager anyway so that I could have a little time off to recover and recuperate.

Go with your instincts thou, every workplace is different.

I'd tell them then they have to give you the time off. I'd also take my time getting there and back, sounds like your boss has a crappy attitude.

I have a feeling employers have to give you time off for all hospital appointments, not just maternity-related, and that it's a legal requirement providing you show them proof (appointment letter). I don't think they can restrict you to just half a day if it will take longer, or ask you to use your annual leave. Anyone else on here know if that is actually the case?

If so, you could take in the appointment letter to your work afterward, and then make sure your time off is recorded as medical leave rather than annual leave.

You are entitled to the time off. What you might want to do, though, is record it as annual leave and then "convert" the time to medical appointment once you've disclosed the appointment later. My HR department said it was ok for me to do that.

Secondsop · 13/09/2012 20:29

Once you've disclosed the pregnancy, rather!

Difficult one. If it was me, I'd tell the boss so you can just get the time off for the scan without all this hassle. You'll be telling him shortly after the scan anyway, so it is just a little earlier than you wanted - but equally just in case everything didn't work out, it would be good for boss to know so that you can get a bit of time off if needed. Good luck x

They only have to give you the time off for the appointment, he can insist on you coming back in after or before even once he knows it's pregnancy related.

Personally if you don't want to show him the appointment letter (obviously telling him you're pregnant) I'd take the half day annual leave. Even if you tell him, he will still expect you back in the afternoon so no point telling until you know all is well on the scan. Good luck for it!
