Interested to know what others did!

Trying to figure out when I will.

When I'd had my 12w scan, because I'm consultant-led and knew I'd have lots of appointments. Plus you legally get extra protection when pregnant, and I was worried about being made redundant.

Paddocks1 · 13/09/2012 10:34

I didn't tell work until i was 20 weeks (hid it well) I just didn't want every conversation to be about babies/bump/pregnancy.
I agree though, its easier to tell them earlier i have a lot more cuppa's made for me now :-)
You do have to legally tell them before you are 25 weeks though.

BionicEmu · 13/09/2012 10:45

I told my managers the day after I got a positive pregnancy test! But I work in a lab with hazardous chemicals, x-rays and fresh tissue, so they needed to know from a H&S point of view. Told the rest of the people I work with after my 12 week scan, although several had already guessed due to my morning/all day sickness.

NellyBluth · 13/09/2012 10:50

At that I thought was 12w, but which later that week at our scan turned out to be 8w... Blush (surprise pg, so actually I told work about a week or so after I found out myself)

I told them earlier though because we were a very small team and another colleague was 2 months more pregnant than me, so I wanted to give my manager a lot of advance to sort problems out. She is a friend too, so I felt comfortable telling her. Oh, and also I had started throwing up dramatically and was already on medication so I was determined that tight-arsed HR would know it was pregnancy related sickness and couldn't complain.

If I hadn't been so friendly with everyone then I would have waited that extra week or so and had the scan. I have friends who haven't told for a long time and imho I think that is a little silly. You don't have to tell everyone, but telling your manager (who tells HR etc) means your absences are all allowed without any question, and you get a health & safety assessment and all that malarkey done. Pg isn't a time when you should be stressing or worrying about anything, so I felt more comfortable knowing it was official at work, even if I wasn't telling random colleagues.

foofooyeah · 13/09/2012 10:53

I waited until nearly six months, I am on the large side so could pass it off as extra cake quite easily.

beaver33 · 13/09/2012 11:00

I'm like you ladymia and still trying to figure it out. Will wait until 8 weeks, I think (2 weeks time).

Planning on telling my boss in confidence purely because my job can be very stressful with long, late hours and last minute travel etc, so I think he needs to know in case I weep/throw up on him without warning.

Am facing two consecutive 16 hour days tomorrow and Saturday, though, so how I'm going to get through that I have no idea....

SoozM · 13/09/2012 11:03

Depends on the job you do but I didn't tell them until I started to show and also because after the first one I couldn't face the endless conversations about it. If your job is physically demanding or risky then tell them straight away as they'll need to do a risk assessment to protect you and baby. It also depends on how your pg is affecting you and whether it might just be easier to let them know why you're feeling so tired/emotional/sick etc. Good luck!

BonaDea · 13/09/2012 11:15

I'm going to tell my boss after the 12 weeks scan. This is mainly because I want to give them as much notice as possible, because my job is specialist in my company and they will have to find an interim to replace me. I am also looking forward to not just feeling fat at work which I do at the moment (10+5). I am also consultant led so have fortnightly all morning appointments, and will be getting lots of extra scans.

Obviously it is completely up to you (as long as you tell them by the end of the 15th week before your due date), but I think you will probably get a bit more lee-way and understanding from colleagues.

ladymia · 13/09/2012 11:35

thanks everyone.

my situation is a little tricky i am at risk of redundancy and my employment will end at the end of december, although before i was made redundant i have already taken the whole of december off so effectively i am here until end november.

i need to be employed really until the end of december as was the plan so i can get SML so i am holding off telling them because they don't really need to make any plans for replacing me.

ladymia if you've not yet been made redundant and tell your employer you're pregnant, you get first dibs on any other suitable vacancies within the company x

sammyleh · 13/09/2012 15:41

I told my boss at about 8 weeks, we're a small company and very close. told my colleagues at 14 weeks :)

ladymia · 13/09/2012 17:36

thanks FluffyJawsOfDoom to be honest i have prepared myself to go, my payout is really not great not is my redundancy but i am happy going and would actually prefer it. also where i work is massively reducing operations.

i phoned the maternity action line this afternoon and they actually advised me to hold off telling them for as long as i can to avoid a sticky situation of them getting rid of me in a hurry, don't think they will not not risking it.

so let's see how long i can hide this flubber around my waist! :)

At 7 weeks. I work in nursing and I need a degree of understanding, especially with the horrendous morning sickness I had to explain to my boss why I kept running off to the loo!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 13/09/2012 18:11

Good luck op :)

beingginger · 13/09/2012 18:21

straight away for me, i work with some chemicals that are dangerous during pregnancy, plus i had horrendous all day sickness so it wasn't easy to hide anyway

Leftwingharpie · 13/09/2012 18:57

At 14 weeks. I was going to tell them straight away after the scan but I didn't realise my boss was going on holiday for two weeks, so I had to suck my stomach in until she got back!

Shesparkles · 13/09/2012 19:01

Colleagues worked it out for themselves when I turned green and left the room at high speed at the same time every morning.

HaveALittleFaith · 13/09/2012 19:08

One of my colleagues guessed within a week of me getting a BFP! She knew we'd had fertility problems and could tell because I seemed so much happier! :)

kidcrayola · 13/09/2012 19:38

I told my line manager and a couple of close colleagues at 5 weeks because I was being sick quite often and acting like a bit of a fruit loop (my line manager made me cry over the most random thing, very embarrassing! )
I formally informed work at 13 weeks. 15 weeks now and hope to let them know my maternity leave dates know the next week or so.

RightUpMyRue · 13/09/2012 19:44

I told my deputy line manager (line manager was on A/L) at 9 weeks. Told my line manager at 10 weeks and everyone else today at 11 weeks Smile

I work with midwives, health visitors and nurses though so most of them had guessed before I told them.

AmeliaRoseMummy · 13/09/2012 19:49

I told them when i was 7 Weeks as i was suffering from bad morning sickness, had scares in the beginning and ept having to take time off to go to hospital and because of the health and safety side of things.

I was on my 3 month probation period though and was told i'd be keeping my job and then all of a sudden when my 3 month was up they god rid of me and then gave a different excuse as to why they god rid of me Hmm
