Nappies

This is going to be a daft question; my disclaimer is that this is DC 1 and I'm clueless. I'm 33+5 and have been doing everything I can to make baby arriving easy on our pockets. So far I have stockpiled a fair few nappies. I have about 150 size 1, 27 size 2 and 50 size 3 (size 1 and 3 seem to completely cover the size 2 range, or am I being thick here).
I'm off to a large tesco today and they have good offers on nappies due to baby week and I have some vouchers. Is it worth stockpiling more and if so what size, or am I wasting my time?

You have a lot of size 1 there! I would say if you're planning to stockpile than size 3 and 4 are the ones they are in the longest. However there are always baby events on at different supermarkets so unless you have lots of storage room I wouldn't bother.
DS2 7 weeks is currently in size 3s. I think we had 2 packets of size 2 and now on the 3s.
Good luck!

I have loads in size 1 because I got a few packets free. Then I realised he prob won't be in them for long so moved onto size 3. Thanks for the advice, I may just leave it.

You sound like you've got a decent stockpile already. To be honest tesco or someone else pretty much always has a special offer on on nappies. Dd is 18 months & have only paid full price for nappies a handful of times. I'd hold off any more size 1 until you know how big baby is as a friends 10lb baby was out Of size 1s almost immediately. Plus you might want to try a few brands to see which work best for your baby. I started out with pampers but am now firmly in huggies camp as pampers always seemed to leak! Different nappies work for different people

To be honest I wouldn't get any more.
My DS stayed in size 1 for a while, skipped through size 2 fairly quickly and stayed size 3 for ages. There is a big difference between a 1 and 3 though so unless you get a growth spurt as mine did you will need size 2.

But different babies suit different nappies. You may find the ones you have don't suit (leak everywhere 20 times a day!) and then you'll need to change brand. Pampers tend to suit skinny babes and Huggies the chubbier ones, but that's a big generalisation. I tried tesco own brand but they always leaked on my DS. Other people have said how great they are.

The shops will be there after baby comes and there will always be one of the supermarkets or boots with an offer on. Good luck!

If you're off to a big Tesco, why not see if they've got TotsBots reusables in? Some are reduced to £3.50 (from £15) although they've sold out of those in my local one Sad

Don't forget breast and maternity pads, a nice new nightie/pj's/dressing gown/slippers for you, lavendar and witch hazel for your post partum bath...

Sizes 1-3 may cover the whole size range in theory, but may not fit in practise. The nappies (and babies) can be long and thin or short and fat. A smaller nappy doesn't absorb as much as a bigger one, and I find that the biggest nappy that fits is the best.

As for brands - I rarely use disposable, but over 2 DC I have found Sainsbury's Basics to be excellent and v cheap.

If you really want to save money on nappies, get washables to use when you have used up the nappies you have -your local authority may even have vouchers to contribute to the cost.

Hi, don't buy anymore! You may find that you have to run through the whole gamut of brands before you find one that fits your baby best. And they seem to change too.

I bought a LOAD of Tesco size midis for my DS and although he fitted them really well for about six weeks, he has started to be the wrong shape now. Same with huggies which I also stockpiled. I keep having to change whole outfits as he has wet his clothes about ten minutes after a nappy change! We have now switched to pampers and had no issues but I have wasted at least £40 on being too organised!

I used size 2 for quite a while but then I only used size 1 for the first couple of weeks and the cord cut out was handy. I think I used size 2 for nearly 2 months and then have been using size 3 for a couple of months since and still in size 3 probably for another couple of weeks.

Aldi nappies are very good value for money - no need to stockpile really as their standard price is very cheap.

I would say you have too many in size one so perhaps see if you can exchange a few packs for size 2. And then just buy as you need them - there are always offers on and if you stick to supermarkets own value brands then you save a lot of money anyway.
