Nappy wrapping machines!

Right, I need the low down. This is my third baby. I did reuseables with dc1, tried them again with dc2 but they were not so fresh after all those years so I ended up with disposables.

I still have a load of reuseables which I want to try and use as much as I can. But will be doing both.

I am not that efficient with taking out the rubbish, and our bathroom is en suite without a window - never had a baby in this house before - so I caved and bought a vastly reduced nappy wrapper from Mothercare yesterday, thinking it might be really useful (after rejecting the very idea till now)

I don't know anyone who has used one - so, are they any use, or are they (pardon the expression) crap?

We used one when DS was born until the refill ran out and we didn't buy another one! It was quite useful but it was a bit pointless for us as we lived in a ground floor flat - was just as easy to go outside to the bin. I can see the value in one if you're upstairs though. My friend only used hers during the night but swears by it for that! HthGrin

undertheduvet · 11/09/2012 17:54

there's a reason they are always reduced, sorry to say but they are rubbish. after one or two nappies they stink to high heaven mine went in the bin after about a month, sorry:-(

EdMcDunnough · 11/09/2012 17:55

Thanks guys...it was only £7 so I thought, well, give it a try.

I cannot quite understand how it stops them from smelling for a whole month,. that seems a bit wrong somehow!

Would you want week old poo in your bedroom? Thought not. I think they are manky personally - just put the bad nappies straight in the outside bin. Probably ok for wet ones though, but I would totally draw the line at poo sitting in a bin indoors for ages.

KnockedUpMell · 11/09/2012 20:09

I didn't get one with ds1, but have got one in anticipation of dd's arrival, as there'll be a lot of poo-ey nappies with them both in nappies. I got the Tommee tippee one and it works really well at containing the smell as each nappy is individually wrapped. I wouldn't fancy going out to throw a poo-ey nappy 10x a day in winter, and am considering getting a second one for downstairs. The angelcare one has poorer reviews on amazon which is why I didn't get tat one (although it is cheaper).

LimeLeafLizard · 11/09/2012 20:16

I had one with my first. It was ok (although a bit fiddly) until he started on solids, after which the smell was unbearable, even with the solid food type refill. Also, the bin might be half price but the refills are quite expensive.

IME, it is much easier to put the nappy in a nappy sack and straight into the outside bin.

EdMcDunnough · 12/09/2012 09:32

Thankyou...yes it is the angelcare one. It's probably rubbish for that price Smile

I've bought one packet of refills, so it should last till five months - I'm undecided whether to take it back now, or just use it while baby is tiny, as it will be mid winter and although we're ground floor, we have communal bins and taking out individual nappies is going to feel a bit yuck, for the neighbours to see iyswim. They seem to double wrap all their rubbish!

After that I might get away with a carrier bag in the bathroom every day...there's no easy answer is there.

We've got the Angelcare one & I think it's great, it really does cut down on the smell. I'm far too lazy pregnant to take every used nappy straight out to the outside bin so it's great in my opinion!

BionicEmu · 12/09/2012 09:55

I have a tommy tippee one and love it! I don't think it smells, and I've been using it for about 20 months now.

TBH DS has had chronic constipation since birth, so we don't really have that many pooey nappies. I don't bother with twisting the top to seal the nappy unless they're pooey either. That way a cassette lasts much, much longer. We don't think you can smell a wee-only nappy if you don't twist it, so I figure I might as well not and save the bag.

Nappy wrappers really do seem to be like Marmite though!

carrielou2007 · 12/09/2012 10:06

Waste of money. Bought one for dd used to use if just for poo nappies wet just straight on nappy sack and bin. Just a waste of time unless you live in top floor flat. Didn't bother for ds it was TT one didn't smell at all but just why would I want a bin full of poo in my house?? Take if back!!

poocatcherchampion · 12/09/2012 10:08

Reusables are the easy answer. I never go near the bins!

EdMcDunnough · 12/09/2012 10:09

Marmite indeed! Smile

thanks all,

I will keep it I think and try it. I might return it if it doesn't keep the smell contained - after all it says it will, so it ought to.

if it's rubbish then I've only paid about £20, and you never know...I might get on with it.

Thought as this is my last baby, I might get real and be a bit lazy - or convenience-minded, should I say! Instead of starting out with super high standards, like I tried to before.

I'm going to sort out my reuseables now, Poocatcher - I found last time that however often I washed them, they had this ingrained smell, and also got pretty rough as our water is very very hard here.

Also we don't have a tumble dryer and when we did, it took so long to dry them that it cost a fortune in electricity. So they were never really soft.

Still - I do really like them, for many reasons, so will see if I can freshen them up somehow.

We are in a top floor flat and got one. It contained the smell but the wrappers don't last anywhere near as long as they claim to! Also, definitely don't use them once you start weaning as they fail in the smell department then (we had the tommee tippee one). In all honesty, I found a carrier bag in the bathroom bin worked perfectly, DH used to take the previous day's bag our each morning on his way to work so no hassle.

ThreeForTea · 12/09/2012 17:53

Since weaning dd we've had a poo happy in the night around twice and she's 21 months now. I don't know if its normal but her bowel movements are generally in the day so there's no need to go outside to throw them away late at night. Also will only be once or twice for a dirty a day. The bf nappies are nowhere near as bad so they coyld prob sit for a good few hours nicely wrapped perfectly happily!

silverangel · 13/09/2012 09:15

I think my Angelcare bin is great, but I have twins so we are essentially emptying it twice as often as you would be with one baby. If it hasn't been emptied for a couple of days there is a bit of a stink!
