Grounds for early delivery....?

Hello

I have an incredibly painful preg-related condition. It's a vulval varicocele. I was in hospital for 3 days of last week, for pain control and rest. The 3 doctors (a surgeon, an obstetrician and a gynae) all said it was one of the worst they'd seen and were very sympathetic towards my pain. However, there is no treatment they can offer me, due to being pregnant. They did offer me bedrest in hospital, but I can't take it, as have 2 DCs and DH works long hours. The best they could do was strong pain relief, Oramorph/pethidine and oral abx in case there was any infection.

The pain is unreal. When I am lying down it's ok, but as soon as I stand up it 'fills' and the pain can take my breath away. It will only get worse as my pregnancy progresses too.

I am currently taking paracetamol and codeine phosphate, but it doesn't really work for long. I don't drive and any length of time on my feet is horrible agony, but I am still doing a few school runs a week, luckily I have some wonderful friends who are helping out, but I can't rely too much. DH is helping as much as he can around the house, but he leaves at 7.30am and arrives back about 7pm.

I am going to have the baby by elective CS, due to also having a history of 2 previous CS's.

I also have a test for gestational diabetes on Friday, as the baby is measuring big.

The reason for my post is this: I have a consultant appointment on Tuesday, and I want to ask if I can be delivered early, due to the pain I am in. I'm at my wits end and sick with pain :( I would like my consultant gynaecologist to agree to schedule me at around 36/37 weeks. The obst surgeon I saw has said he thinks it is a good idea.

Have any of you any experience of any of this?

Sorry it's so long

TIA

SC

(Also going to post this in health)

It's not uncommon for them to do it for certain conditions and with steroids the baby should be pretty much OK at that gestation.

No experience but I have read in numerous places that 37 weeks is considered full term so I would suggest trying to get through till then (not sure how many weeks you are at the moment?) - I can't see why they wouldn't agree at that time if it's seen as full term.

If you are measuring big perhaps you could ask for a growth scan? if that backs up that your baby is big then that would add to your arguments.

Yeah agree.
So they say 40 weeks right, BUT that is then 10 months isnt it?

I delivered at 37 weeks, all was well and my ds was a skinny melinky not a bruiser.

It depends on your circumstances and there may be medical grounds to deliver by ELCS early. I have been doing lots of reading around ELCS as I am having one next Thursday due to a history of EMCS and the rate for maternal request elcs being granted is about 1/3 (33%) and the optimal time for this is 39 weeks. The only grounds that I have found for early delivery are medical ones, however, it looks like your obs consultant may have agreed to this already.

I have also been told by my Obs Consultant and my midwife that GTT for GD is not reliable after 32 weeks so depending on how far pg you are you may be being referred for a test that is unreliable.

nananaps 40w is 9 months - there are more than 4 weeks in a calendar month.

Good luck op

Due to my medical conditional and pain I had CS at 33 weeks was originally 36 weeks but consultant saw me at 31 weeks and said he couldnt leave me in that pain any longer - he gave me a dose of steriods and my son was a whopping 4lb 8oz at 33 weeks and have NO medication or oxygen at all and was only in hospital 4 days.

Its def worth talking to them and hopefully they will agree that 36/37 weeks is fine

minipie · 11/09/2012 15:36

nananaps and fluffy apparently in China they regard pregnancy as lasting 10 months not 9, because they use lunar months which are 4 weeks.

(sorry for the tangent OP)

SleepyCaz · 11/09/2012 20:27

Thanks everyone. I am 28 weeks. My GTT is Friday.

I can't cope any longer, I'm constantly in agony.

I hope they help me :(

At 37 weeks a baby does have a really good chance but most hospitals now will give steroids before 38 weeks as some babies really do need the time inside. 40 weeks is term but not all babies are 40 week termers. All my babies have been premature (31-35 weeks) and all done really well.

ok ok in my defence, it took me aprox 11 minutes to describe and remember the name of an apple today. Nowt fancy, just the word "apple".
So i am not thinking at all in a coherant manner.....ignore my fuckwittery, its rife at present!
