I'm currently trying to decide which breast pump to buy, I want my DH to be able to feed the baby too. Has any one got any suggestions? Thanks ladies x

Definitely not a manual one. We got the medula electric one. Worked for both our kids!! Still bf no 2. She's nearly 2...

We got an electric Medela swing pump, which worked great for me.

Medula here too - 4.5 years old and 3 children later it still works perfectly -

freya86 · 08/09/2012 21:44

Looks like that's the one to go with!! Huge help to know I'm going down the right road. Only one friend has a baby (he's almost 4 now) and she didn't use a pump so this is the only place I could go for advice

Another vote for the medella swing! It's fab!

carrielou2007 · 08/09/2012 22:55

Another vote for it here, tried manual TT one was awful!! Electric m was fab though very odd can't recommend it enough Smile

avent isis is brilliant (can be mains/battery/manual depending on your mood or power availability). Managed to pump daily for 6 months then 3x a day for 5 months when I went back to work last time and it is still going string with DD2

annaban · 08/09/2012 23:50

Hi, I tried Medula Swing (possibly too early though at approx 5 weeks) and felt like it didn't work for me... Feeling like a dairy cow etc.

Fast forward 6 weeks: breast feeding totally established, comfortable with concept of expressing, sterilising etc and tommy tippy hand pump was excellent for me!

Feeding is such a huge deal, I'd settle in before trying to commit to anything!

Spectra 3 from amazon gets my vote. It was fab when I used it for DD and can be made into a double for £7 by getting an extra shield, also from amazon. It's a fab price and very efficient. I loved mine!

I used avent isis and found it was effective, will be using it again this time. Easy to use.
Be prepared for funny shaped nipples, they do go back!

The Medela Swing was good here too - you can also pick up very reasonably priced ones on ebay.

neontetra · 09/09/2012 08:48

I found the Avent isis good. I actually borrowed one from the midwives for the first month, to make sure I was ok with expressing by pump (I believe some people just can't get on with it), before shelling out on my own. I think the midwives in most areas can lend pumps, though some ask for a deposit. Then I got my Avent second hand on eBay. There are loads on there hardly used, as people buy them but find they hate expressing, or they stop bf.

pinkyp · 09/09/2012 08:49

Avent manual pump - never tried any others as this was great for both my ds's and a fraction of the price Smile

Highly recommend the Ameda Lactaline double electric. You can use as a single or a double, and it comes with various replacement valves so you're not suddenly without a pump if a valve splits (which I only managed to do because I was too rough cleaning it once!)

I initially tried Tommee Tippee manual (rubbish and gave me cramp in my hand) then the Tommee Tippee electric which was also rubbish - valves kept breaking so moisture went up the suction tube so had to keep turning it off, putting tube on towel on radiator to dry (took hours) before being able to try it again.

If you go for a double pump, you may need a "pumping top" to save from arm ache holding the pumps. Don't buy one - they're basically just a crop top or vest top with a £2 coin sized hole cut out around each nipple so the pump can be placed there and then you can pump hands free. You could make your own out of an old, tight vest top.
