Calcified placenta

Posting with the hope someone has some experience of this! My sister went for a scan today to check fluid levels! She is 38+4 and the sonographer told her that her placenta was calcified! They also said her largest amniotic fluid pool is just 3cm!

They have told her to keep an eye on movement however she has consulted doctor google And is panicking! Has anyone any experience of this at all? Thanks in advance

A relative of mine was told similar, she was a little earlier than your sis. She was induced a week later as the fluid levels dropped more (2cm?) She believes placentas do calcify at full term anyway (no idea if this is true as have never gone to term / overdue).

I would be wondering - how much of placenta is calcifying? Is the baby's size / growth / heartrate okay?Does she have any signs / history of pre-eclampsia? Can she go in and get monitored if she wants? Are they going to do any more scans to check placental function?

Personally I would be asking for induction but I have a bad obstetric history and am probably over cautious.

Thanks for the response, they have said baby is growing more than average and heart rate Is fine! She has to go in for monitoring on Wednesday And then for another scan to check fluid levels next Saturday!

I personally think induction would be best especially with how far she is gone but I suppose you just trust what the midwives say

Does she smoke? Smoking can cause calcification of the placenta

Mrssummers · 08/09/2012 18:27

She tells me she smokes around 3 a day! I have told her off but she said she found it very hard to quit!

Ahh . That is why the placenta is calcified then .

One of the main causes is smoking - even just 3 a day can cause severe calcification and premature breakdown of the placenta.

Ahhhh right! She has just called the day unit back so she could speak to someone about it and they have said she shouldn't be worrying and as long as baby is moving fine then she will be ok! I hope they are right!

I have had a calcified placenta in all 3 pregnancies and I am a non smoker. All 3 babies have been fine, 2 & 3 were born at 42 weeks so very calcified.

Thank you! Have just spoken to my sister and she is feeling reassured

I had a scan last week at 39+1 and there were spots of calcification on my placenta. I don't smoke. The Ob said it was normal for term placentas to start calcifying.
