I'm interested in opinions...just been for obstetrician appointment (I'm in France so all appointments with doctor, not midwife as in UK) I'm 26 weeks and have put on 6 kilos/12 pounds since being pregnant. He's warned me today about putting too much weight on...and I thought I was doing really well! Just wondered what other pregnant ladies think??

I'm desperate for a chocolate biscuit but feel I can't have one now!!

Um, I just weighed myself for the first time since becoming pregnant (37 weeks) and I've put on 4 stone!! My baby is almost 8lbs already but thats still a lot. I'm planning on getting back on the 'good' eating once she's born. 12lbs really doesn't seem that much at all.

steben · 06/09/2012 18:24

Hmmm I am 33 weeks and have put on 4 stone Blush

This is second time round for me and I can only hope the weight goes as quickly as it did first time - I was actually slimmer 4 months after having DD than when I fell pregnant!

I had a tough 2nd pregnancy and afterwards has 3 stone to lose. I have lost it all (except the last 0.75lbs) sensibly with the support of weightwatchers online using the app on my iPhone. It is sometimes inevitable you put on weight. It's not particularly difficult to lose it again once you are no longer pregnant. Try not to worry. Keep well nourished, well hydrated and make healthy choices. Losing the weight will be a breeze xx

They do keep an eye on your in France, you get weighted at each appointment I believe! Here I got weighted at my first appointment (10 weeks?) and not since. The battery on my scales has died and at now 35 weeks, I have NO intention of weighting myself.... till 2013. Ignorance is bliss (for now).

opalescent · 06/09/2012 18:49

Oh dear, now I'm worried too, I'm also 26 weeks, and was feeling very pleased at having put 12lb on. SadSad

Tiredandgrumpy2 · 06/09/2012 18:49

Your weight does not define you!

Emmiedarling · 06/09/2012 20:59

3 stone here 35 weeks!! Started at 8 stone...

pjd · 06/09/2012 21:08

I put on 3 stone in each of my two pregnancies. Lost it both times after around 4/5 months, so all is back to normal now. There was no way I was going to deny myself anything while pregnant!!!! Go on, have the biscuit!!!

EarnestDullard · 06/09/2012 21:15

I've kept a spreadsheet Blush of my weight gain, comparing this pregnancy with my last. At 26w I'd put on about 20lbs (9kgs). 12lbs is fine imo, but everyone's different, and it depends how much you weighed before getting pregnant as well.

And if your body is telling you you need a biscuit, eat the damn biscuit Grin

cakelover75 · 06/09/2012 21:16

Almost 3st and I'm 28 weeks pregnant. You haven't gained that much compared to your british counterparts so try not to let his comments get to you :)

princesslina · 06/09/2012 22:20

You are not in the Dordogne are you ... sounds like one of the feared obstetricians at my local hospital whos wife is a dietician and he is obsessed with weight. The averages over here do tend to be lower ... in my UK books they say 10 to 14kg average and when I told midwife here she said nooo 8 to 12 average, however I have the most wonderful Obs who is also 'chef de service' top dog, who said to relax about weight if you eat pretty healthly (but not obsessively so) and do a bit of exercise then your body will put on what it needs (a friend of mine had the same Obs several years ago, she was v slim to start with but put on 24kg, he did not reprimand her or put her on a diet and she lost the weight afterwards and had a lovely healthy baby). I think 6kg is a healthy gain not too much not too little, try not let the Dr make you worry unnecessarily ... you could change your Dr if need be.

CakeBump · 06/09/2012 22:23

I'm in Germany, 24 weeks and have put on 6kg. It's regarded as in the normal range by my doctor....

Angelico · 06/09/2012 22:56

12lbs sounds grand! Think French docs can be a bit obsessed about weight to be honest (from reading a few threads on here). Also depends on your starting weight - the heavier you are to start the less you need to put on whereas if you are quite slim your body might need a bit more stored fat.

Badgerina · 06/09/2012 23:43

I've no idea how much I've put on! Less than first time round. I think French doctors can be a bit... funny about weight tbh.

femmeaufoyer · 07/09/2012 11:27

Thanks everyone, I feel better now....and I did have the chocolate biscuit! I think it's true that French doctors are more concerned about weight. I had my first child in the UK and was never weighed, and had no idea how much I put on. So it just felt a bit judgemental and I'm sensitive about my weight anyway!

Hi femme,
I live in France too and am going through my second pregnancy here. I'm 24 weeks and have put on 6kg, so you're doing better than me!!!!
For my first baby, I put on 20kg in total (I had him at 42+3 and put a lot of the weight on right at the end). Noone said a thing.
I have French friends here who put on 25kg for their pregnancies and others who put on only 6kg.... so there's a bit of everything here no matter what the health-professionals try to preach.
I think the thing is that if you're very skinny to start with, the doctors don't worry about you gaining more weight than is recommended. But god-forbid if you are naturally curvy to start with, coz then the doctors make you feel awful for even going the slightest bit over!
I wouldn't worry too much about your doctor (and I would definitely have that chocolate biscuit)... 6 kg is not much at all for 26 weeks!!!!
