Excessive thirst in late pg

I am so thirsty at the moment (dry lips and mouth) so I am drinking about 3l a day (very dilute squash as I don't like water). This is most unlike me as I normally struggle to drink 1.5l.

I am 38 weeks and also have suddenly got a bigger bump (it wasn't that big until a few days ago) and have been in latent labour for about 1 1/2 weeks (had an hour of contractions every 1 min on Monday so had MWs out for HB but it stopped after a bit!). Baby is moving frequently and seems well.

I had a GTT done at 28 weeks and it was fine so I don't think it's diabetes. Any other ideas?

I had clear GTT test at 25 weeks - only to have to repeat at 33 weeks and found I had GD. It's worth mentioning to your MW but I am pretty sure someone on GD top tips thread said that from 37 weeks they don't really do much for it - don't quote me on that though. I'm controlling mine with diet so far.

Hope all is well - the end is in sight for you :) I'm 36 weeks on Fri and having CS at 38+4.

Diet I don't have to worry about as I am 14lbs under pre-pg weight! I really hope it's not GD though and just the unseasonably warm weather.

Good luck with the baby Smile

truth the first sign of my GD was weight loss - but maybe you lost weight with MS? Either way if it is GD they prob won't do much about it now but would be good for you to know about as you have a 50% chance of GD in subsequent pregnancies and up to a 50% chance of type 2 diabetes in later life :(

Irony is I feel fine but I was hospitalised ON after 'feeling fine' all that day and drinking loads, was then found to have ketones / be severely dehydrated / had lost weight / baby was measuring big. It was all a bit of a shock Confused I also had blamed the hot weather - I remember I had sweated madly all that day too, assumed it was the heat but can be a sign of high sugars.

Really hope it's not GD though - and good luck yourself :)

Thanks for replying Angelico, sorry to hear you were so unwell with the GD.

Not really any morning sickness (mild queasiness and some food/drink aversions).

Baby is measuring on the small side at the moment (just a week or so behind) and the weight loss has occurred through out the pg (was 16lbs under at 33w so have actually put on a little bit) and I am not skinny by any means. I lost weight with DD3's pg (4lbs down) and only put on 4lb with DD2 so I have a history of losing weight while pg (it's the bit afterwards I struggle with Wink).

I think I'll call the MWs in the morning. I only called them Monday morning as I was sure I had a bladder infection (weeing loads and back pain) but it was clear so no infection, by Monday evening I was dying of thirst but assumed it was due to the constant contractions/heat. Doesn't explain why I am still thirsty 2days later.....

I don't normally drink much, but I have found when pregnant I drink roughly 3x what I normally drink in a day. And the last 3-4 weeks I drink like a fish, so it's normal from my viewpoint!

Angelico · 06/09/2012 09:21

As roger says may well just be normal pregnancy thirst but with the weight loss might just be worth mentioning. Certainly the MW said to me a lot of pregnant women don't realise how much we are supposed to be drinking, just to keep up with extra blood / amniotic fluid etc. Think she said absolute minimum of 2.5 litres, 3.5litres if it's very hot weather.

truth - only type 2 diabetes is connected with being overweight, so mention of 'diet' in connection with GD doesn't mean you have to go on a diet to lose weight, it means you might have to control your blood glucose levels via your diet (normally by reducing or chaning your caborhydrate intake).

Thirst is a classic symptom, and you should get it checked out.

Went to the GP today and I have a bladder infection, BP was low (95/60) and my blood sugars were 4.6 which was apparently okay. I have a blood test for tomorrow morning as well to test for diabetes but my sample was clear of sugar.

I ended up drinking 4l yesterday and today I have had 2.5l already!

Thanks for all the replies.
