What to expect with physio - ?SPD

I have a physio appt this afternoon at 4.15.

I possibly have SPD. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

The letter says to wear shorts if I have them, but I don't have any I can get on. Will this matter?

Hope you see this before you go to your appointment!

I had back pain on my left side from about 15 weeks. It wasn't spd but I had difficulties with sitting, standing or walking for any length of time as would get shooting pains and was only really comfortable lying down.

I had my first physio appointment in May and from what I can remember it was lots of questions about where the pain was, how much it hurt on a scale of 1-10, what made it worse etc and she checked my flexibilty -bending forward, how far I could raise my leg when I was sitting or lying down. Because I had a lot of tightness/muscle spasm in my back she then pushed on some pressure points (a bit painful!) to help release it and gave me some gentle exercises to do at home. I wasn't told to wear shorts. I had fairly loose trousers on and she just pulled down the waistband and pulled up the trouser leg to get to the bits she needed!

I had fortnightly sessions after that up until I was 36 weeks as it gradually got better with the exercises, constantly being attached to a hot water bottle and starting maternity leave. Am now 40 + 3 and waiting impatiently for bubs to be born but was told I could refer myself back to the physio up to one month after the birth in case any problems crop up again.

Hope this helps!

Physio will show you exercises to help and good positions to sleep in / how to get in and out of bed etc - things that help you manage the pain.

Might also give you a very attractive girdle thing to wear around your hip / pelvic area to help support the bones - which are too mobile basically.

Have to say I think swimming and massage have made the biggest difference to me as well as trying to achieve a good balance between not overdoing things / but keeping a bit active still.

Hope you feel better soon!

I was given a support belt which is basically very strong elastic and went under the bump and around my hips to take some of the weight off my pelvis. It was fantastic and whilst not relieving all the pain, made a big difference immediately.

I have been in physio weekly for three weeks now (17 weeks gone). SPD is quite bad so I've got a support belt and crutches and each week she tries to loosen areas of tension. The pressure points pain can make your eyes water, and initial assessment of the symphysis pubis is quite intimate! Hope it went ok for you Smile

Thank you. Was given some exercises and tubigrip to wear. And told to use my gum ball. He said if I get worse I can have crutches!
