Hello ladies

Can anyone tell me if it's OK to use thrush cream during pregnancy? The man in Boots said I can't.. but he doesn't have an itchy fanjo so I don't think he really understands ;-) If he is right then are there any natural remedies which actually work?

One final question - who is the right person to ask about these kind of minor pregnancy-related medical ailments, ie midwife or GP?

Thanks!

Hi,

I had thrush the other week and the doctor gave me some cream for it so I assume it is ok! I do remember the midwife telling me that if I wanted thrush cream I would have to get a prescription or get DH to get it for me, as pharmacists won't sell it over the counter to pregnant women.

For minor medical ailments I've still been going to see my GP.

Thanks! I shall go and see my GP then and get a prescription.

I bought some canesten over the counter at superdrug... no questions asked. This is what the doctor prescribed me last time but I didn't have time to wait for an appt to get a prescription so just bought some. I would get a prescription from the GP if you can though because then it's free :) GP's advice was no oral tablets and insert the pessary with your fingers rather than the applicator so that it doesn't go too deep. And the clotrimazole cream that comes with it is fine too.

Yes, you can use the cream, I checked with my midwife. She also said that if the thrush doesn't go away, the pessary is also allowed during pregnancy.
Her advice was to get it from GP on prescription because it might well reoccur and I'd end up spending loads - the internal and external cream's £10 a time in Boots.

Live yoghurt eases the itching momentarily, but doesn't clear the thrush, I've found. Nor does bicarbonate of soda. Nor tea tree oil in the bath.
Short-term relief only.
