If it is non-liver based I guess so!

I had mackerel pate yesterday, didn't realise that was frowned upon!

The issue with pate is usually listeria and too much vitamin A in the liver.

I've been eating liver throughout (cooked in pomegranate juice - mmmm!), and making my own pate and eating it. Told my midwife and she said my diet probably accounted for my good levels of iron - so this whole thing about not eating liver is all a bit disingenuous if you ask me :)

SarryB · 05/09/2012 09:30

Totally thought this was about making pate from your placenta...

SapphireandFevertree · 05/09/2012 09:38

High intakes of vitamin A (found in large quantities in liver) can cause birth defects. Also theres the risk of listeria. So I'm with Sundaesundae.

minipie · 05/09/2012 10:57

Yes I'd have thought so - can't be much risk of listeria if you eat it immediately.

Re liver, I wouldn't eat much due to the vitamin A, but a little bit is fine I'm sure. It's a build up of vitamin A you need to avoid and I can't see that that is going to happen from just one liver pate session.

Everyone has their own risk limits though.

I thought the vitamin A/ liver fears in pregnancy had been disproven? I can't find the report online at the moment, but I'll post it when I do.

Even for non-pregnant people, however, they don't recommend more than one portion (about 100g - 200g) of liver per week.

I would eat liver, or any other, pate I cooked myself.

victoriassponge · 05/09/2012 15:22

Ha! @ SarryB thought the same thing here :)

I made mushroom pate a couple of weeks ago when I had a craving for pate.

It was just as nice and did the job of hitting the spot - no liver involved whatsoever!

Badgerina · 06/09/2012 00:53

I wouldn't eat liver pâté but I'd eat any other kind of pâté whether I'd made it or not. Personal choice though.

FreeButtonBee · 06/09/2012 07:22

If I could be bothered I would! I don't think small amounts of pate will do any damage - I think that the evidence for the dangers of Vit A came from a women who ate nothing but liver for days on end. So don't eat the whole lot and eat it within a couple of days.

Very interesting. I love chicken liver pate (homemade) but haven't eaten it since being pg. Might ask the MW next time I have an appointment.

DolomitesDonkey · 06/09/2012 08:23

It's a total myth that Vitamin A is bad for pregnancy - it is an ESSENTIAL Vitamin which is NEEDED after 20 weeks for proper development.

Google it.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 06/09/2012 09:16

I have been eating shop bought pâté on occasion throughout this pregnancy. All things in moderation.

ZuleikaD · 06/09/2012 10:01

Dolomites I think we all know that Vitamin A is essential, but the nhs advice is that pate made from liver contains harmful quantities of it.

sundaesundae · 06/09/2012 10:04

There are two types of vitamin A, the one of concern is vitamin A from retinol that is found in liver. Vitamin A is necessary, but it needs to be the right form.

There is a degree of blanket banning to make it fit the lowest common denominator, so I think it is a personal choice about whether you feel the risk of eating pate once a week is low enough for you to take.
