1:260 chance of Downs - further investigations?

I'm pregnant with number 3. Am 35. I just found out that my chance of Down's at term is 1:260 (combined test) - this is described as low risk by my hospital but it seems a bit high for comfort, and I know some hospitals offer invasive tests at anything above 1:300. I have two healthy children already and am just not sure if I am being unreasonably paranoid, but wondered if anyone had any advice/experience.

My nearest clinic (FMC type place) offers invasive testing at 1:250. I was 1:75 at 39 after Nuchal had a missing nasal bone. I booked in for CVS and had the NT redone. The bone had appeared a week and 1:2500+ This meant I cancelled the CVS. Can you get a NT done? Your bloods will be high just because of your age....

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy and hope this isn't stressing you out too much! I had a 1:100 risk with my first pregnancy (at 29) and after much agonising decided to have an amniocentesis- it was uncomfortable but I had the preliminary results the next day and he was fine. We were quoted a 1% risk of miscarriage from the amnio which was clearly difficult as it was exactly the same risk that the baby would have Down's. In fact my consultant at the foetal medicine unit said although a 1% risk is always quoted, she had never had a woman miscarry post-amnio....but as she said, there always has to be a first Confused

I would be very surprised if you were offered invasive tests at your level of risk. At 35 I believe the background risk is 1:350 so in real terms your risk is really only marginally higher....there is a 259/260 chance your bubs will not have DS.....it's so hard isn't it when you're given a kind of "grey" figure, I remember thinking if the risk had been 1:10 I would have known exactly what to do! Have you spoken to the midwife about it?

ThisIsBloodyHardWork · 04/09/2012 20:49

I haven't spoken to the midwife, no - been sort of mulling it over all day. I am 14 weeks - not sure if that is too late a for a NT to be redone? But I might call one of the private places tomorrow and have a chat with someone about options. Thanks!

I think that's a good course of action. I found them wonderfully reassuring for both pg I went to them about. Congratulations. Hope you get past this horrid phase soon.

Just Googled and as I'm 14 weeks today, I'm too late to have the NT redone. Has anyone had a quadruple test? It seems to be available but not sure how reassuring that would be

perhaps one way of thinking about it is would a definite yes diagnosis affect whether you proceed withe the pregnancy? I had no testing because I was certain I would not terminate for downs. If you would then naturally it makes sense to seek a definite answer but if you wouldnt there is probably no point, bearing in mind the small risk of miscarriage.

1:260 sounds big, but that is a risk of 0.38% that your baby has Down's syndrome. The other way of looking at that calculation is that 99.62% of babies given your risk will not have Down's.

mum2D3 · 19/11/2021 06:28

Hi not sure how long ago you posted about the 1 in 260 chance of Down syndrome. Today I was given the same % .. Please let me know what your results where? hope all went well and wondering if you went through with the invasive procedure? Thanks

Phoenix2021 · 19/11/2021 08:10

HI @mum2D3

Just do NIPT like harmony or panorama if you know you will be too anxious to deal with a 1 in 260 risk. If NIPT comes back low risk then no need to proceed to invasive testing like amnio. NIPT is more accurate than combined testing.

texenstar · 19/11/2021 19:32

I was given a 1 in 365 chance of DS due to a low Papp-a hormone found in the 12 week screening.

I took the IONA NIPT test which is a non invasive blood test that gives a more accurate result than the combined test.

It cost £300 privately but you also have the choice to find out gender for free and I was really glad I took it. Results came back as lowest risk result :)
