Do you know when when baby "drops" ?

Well, I'm offically due today but the little one has no intention of making an apperance. I'm feeling no different today that what I've felt for the past couple of weeks. Baby is still very high and enjoying kicking his mum mercilessly. Tell me, do you know when the baby has "dropped" and is this a must before contractions/labor starts. Everyday I'm waiting for different sensations, bloody shows, cramps etc but until now - nada! Does this also mean he will be REALLY late or could it all happen .... tomorrow??

I'm sure I knew when dd dropped a few weeks before - but if it's any consillation dd was extremely active the night before labour started (while I was on hen night) so maybe....

Apparently first babies usually drop a bit before labour starts, but later babies usually don't. Hopefully Pupuce or Mears will be able to give some detail to the 'usually' bit there! I'm due 2 weeks after you and last doctor's appointment she said the baby's head had engaged 'a little bit' but there was still a long way to go, but to reassure you I couldn't feel the difference at all except that I don't have any problems with stomach acid at night anymore. A couple of nights ago I did feel baby move and something that felt like my pubic bone resonating (hard to describe) so I thought he might be trying to turn his head, but apart from that I really can't tell whether it is engaged or not. Yours could quite easily be slightly engaged without you knowing it, I think.

Thanks guys. Just called my mum (I'm number five of seven!) She said that even with me she couldn't feel me drop and that most of her deliveries were a complete surprise. Only in one of the seven births did her waters break naturally. She also begged me not to try castor oil. She was advised to use it on her first but had a rotten time of it. What would we do without our Mums?? Got another appointment with Doc on Wednesday. Will find out then if I've rippened and he's dropped etc. Will keep you informed on the Dec/Jan thread - if only to give me something to do

Neither of my babies' heads fully engaged before delivery if that helps. All the best.

Hi Kiwicath, Thank God for mums and telephones. Sorry you are on your own there and hope the phone call didn't cost too much! I'm due next week, and my doc wouldn't say whether or not I 'dropped', but said that the baby is sitting very low w/ head down. I don't think it makes much difference, as your mum has basically said. I do feel like I can breathe a bit easier lately, and have felt a strange pain/pressure on my pubus(?) but it went away. The doc said it was probably just the position of the baby. Good luck! WIll see you on the other thread.

I was never personally aware of baby's head "engaging" (2 pregnancies). MWs were commenting towards the end of my pregnancies that baby's head was deep down in pelvis, that was the only indication. First baby came at 39 weeks, too.

Hayls · 21/12/2003 18:22

I'm 34-35 weeks and last week my mw told me that baby was 3/5 engaged. TBH I hadn't felt any different, although my bump definitely looks a bit lower and about 90% of all the movement I feel is in the same place, low down on my left hand side. Apparently a lot of babies, especially second ones don'tr engage until labour starts. This probably didn't help!

hi girls hope u r doing ok i am 34 weeks and 4 days and i new he #had dropped because i was getting alot of pressure when i walk and can feel his head in my pelvis when i went to mw last week she confirmed he was head dwn postion and vry low into my pelvis does this mean i can go anytime? is he ready? this is my first x

katyjo · 06/09/2006 14:04

Hi kerry26,
I started to get the same feelings approx the same time as you, I was examined at 37.5 weeks and mw said baby wasn't fully engaged, so I thought I had a while to go but my waters broke 3 days later!! I read somewhere that once the baby drops delivery is about 2 weeks away, but this certainly didn't apply to me. I think you are nearly there, get the plastic sheet on the bed, but you may still have a while to go, so don't panic yet!!Good Luck!!

kerry26 · 06/09/2006 17:06

Increased need to pee, waking up 3 times a night to squeeze out a teaspoon of pee...that was my cue that ds had "dropped".

Mum2FunkyDude · 06/09/2006 21:20

Oooops only just noticed the date on the original post

You poor things! I found it got really hard in the last few weeks, I felt heavy and awkward and really tired. I finished for mat leave a few weeks before ds was due which was lovely, although I felt guilty sitting watching tv on the sofa all day, but it was good. Have you girls finished for mat leave yet? My advice go spoil yourself, a facial or massage (someplaces do special pg massage) I found swimming was fantastic, if you can get passed the swimming costume the water feels really good, you feel light again!! Although I went swimming everyday for 3 days before ds was born, so maybe it brought on labour!! I'll be thinking about you girls. XX
