Has anyone had a private anomaly scan? I've booked one for thurs as my nhs scan is quite late and I'm going out of my mind with worry. Just wondering if the scans are the same as on the nhs? Do they go through a checklist? I'm so desperate to know baby is ok.

Depends who does it. Usually though it is same as long as you are at the correct number of weeks.

Try not to worry so much. Why are you so worried? Thats the thing with pregnancy - you can drive youself mad. Try and relax.

The scans will be the same as an NHS one.

But the reason the main NHS anomaly scan is at 20ish weeks is medical: that is the size at which you can be highly confident (note not 100%, ever) that anomalies will be visible. Earlier scans are inherently a less reliable diagnostic tool because some things do not show up before a certain length gestation.

Il be 19 weeks with the private scan nearly 23 weeks for nhs one. I always worry at the anomaly scan as my mum had to deliver a baby at 22 because she had spina bifida and hydrocephalus. it just always plays on my mind. And I'm a natural born worrier anyway. The scan is with babybond

If you can afford it, pay for the extra scan but it won't stop you worrying! I bet everything is fine! Good luck with your pregnancy.

The scans I had in Fetal Medicine Centre in London were a done by doctors, not radiographers as on NHS. Can't compare the anomaly scan but I did the 12-week scan on both NHS and at FMC, and the private scan was much more thorough and with immediate result (St.Mary's in Paddington gave me the 12 week scan result a month and a half after the scan - scandalous!).

The key thing is to ask the place - what are the qualifications of the person doing it - at my private scan - they had a fab high tech machine and the lady had been doing it for 20 years or soemthing, but pased over to another collegue for more complicated things....when i had a problem with my MW who couldnt be bothered to allay my fears over something, i called them back up and she was on the phone patiently explaining something to me for a good ten mins!

I used the Fetal Medicine Centre in London too, and agree they were great. Their equipment was much newer hence you go a sharper and clearer view of things (plus the 4D bit was amazing). The session is about twice as long as the NHS one as they have a longer / more detailed checklist of things that they go through, and they are very thorough! I had a 12 week and a 20 week scan done there and both doctors were excellent and very personable. Would highly recommend. I don't live in London by the way, but don't live too far outside it. It was well worth the trip in.

I had a private 12 week scan and will be going to the same place for a 22 week scan. The equipment was much better, they had much more time, and were more thorough. I was seen was an experienced obstetrician with extensive experience on the area, and felt I was in much better hands. This was how I felt, and may not be an accurate reflection of the NHS care available in your area.

To be honest, my early scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre in London was exactly as good as my NHS hospital scan. However, I'm booked into a London hospital where the founder of the FMC runs the scanning clinic, so I think the scans are quite advanced - in fact we got the results of our Down's risk and triple screen within 45 minutes after the 12-week scan!
