Having extreme cramps in my lower abdomen which become almost unbearable especially when going to the toilet. I find myself sitting on the toilet for more than an hour at a time for some relief even though nothing happens after the initial tiny bit of loose stool i pass. Had diarreah since last monday which has now subsided slightly and i am only passing small amounts of loose stools a few times a day. Saying that i feel constipated when sitting on the toilet, and feel as though there is a lot of pressure and like i need to push a large poo out. But nothing. The cramps are like the burny sensation you get in your lower abdomen when its that time of the month. I know it is not contractions as i have no tightening and the trace has also not picked up any contractions at the hospital. I am currently lying down with a hot water bottle curled up, as its the only position i can get comfortable even though im still in a lot of pain. I have taken paracetamol which has not helped. The feeling of needing to have a bowel movement is constant and i also feel like i constantly have to wee but only pass very little at a time(bear in mind i am going to the loo A LOT so thats explains why im only passing a little but does not explain the urge iykwim). Urine, blood pressure and everythings fine. So is baby. I have no idea whats happening in my body i just know im in a lot of pain and discomfort. Has anybody had this before? Everyone keeps saying its my body gearing up for labour but im not so sure, as have had no tightenings or contractions at all throughout this pregnancy, not even BH - just menstrual like cramps. Its only the past few days they have become unbearable though and a lot more intense than regular tummy cramps. Just looking for some answers really. Been and seen midwife at clinic and been to the hospital. I am 37+5 days pregnant with my first baby. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you had an internal check? I had exact same as you when i was pregnant with dd and it turned out to be a bacterial infection called trich. it is also a std but don't let that scare you, it is to do with discharge and stuff.

Yacka · 03/09/2012 18:50

Hi there didn't want to leave u unanswered. Please ring your midwife as if u are having pains which feel u need to poo it sounds like my labour. I didn't realise I was in labour with my first. I just kept feeling like k needed t the toilee pains were nothing like I believed labour to be. I only got true contractions as I about to push. Hope u are ok and have someone with u.

SkinnyMarinkADink · 03/09/2012 18:51

By the way i didn't get it through sexual ways, god knows how i got it. only ever slept with dh and didnt have sex since dd was conceived the midwife said it could of been from a public toilet!

I had an unbearable pushing down feeling in my nether regions late on last pregnancy which felt like a combo of tummy gripes/ period or hormonal pain and feeling I needed a big poo. Joyous!
I think I was told it was the baby's head engaging and putting all that pressure on that area. Has your bump dropped a bit? I agree with skinny, always best to get checked, and they won't think it silly for asking either - after all at 37.5 weeks you are near as dammit at term. Good luck x

Runningblue · 03/09/2012 20:02

So sorry, I've missed your last sentence saying you've been to see midwife. I'd keep a very close note of when the pain started, has it got worse etc, then pester them regularly. It does sound like baby gearing up..

ThisOnce · 03/09/2012 20:05

I had diarrhoea for the last week of my last pregnancy. It passed as soon as I gave birth. Think it was the baby's head so far engaged there was no room for anything else.

Runningblue · 03/09/2012 20:09

Diarrhoea is also a sign of your body clearing out, preparing for birth ... But agreeing and laughing with you thisonce- remember that with joy too- happy days Hmm

FirstTimeMumma · 04/09/2012 00:15

Skinny - no i have not had an internal in ages, been to the hospital a lot the past fortnight and been to see my midwife at the usual appointments but after explaining my symptoms etc they have not offered an examination! Maybe because all of my tests are coming back clear?

Yacka - been to the hospital and was put on a trace but they said it wasn't labour and that they have no idea why I'm having these cramps! They did however say that this is how labour starts off for some people sometimes... But its been two full days of constant cramps, surely something would have happened by now? A show or something at least?

Running - that makes me feel a little better thankyou! I do hope it's the start of something (don't we all at this stage) only thing keeping me going just now is the thought that its my body doing what it does naturally!

Once - i hope so. Would be nice if this wasn't all for nothing and totally unrelated!

Thankyou all so much for replying ladies. Think i might give my GP a phone tomorrow to be seen by a doctor instead of a midwife, maybe they'll be able to offer more of an explanation?

Will keep posted if junior decides to show up, highly in doubt atm though!

J x

Not what you want to hear but i had severe period like cramps on and off for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy and went 11 days overdue. The cramps would come on for a couple of days - be very very painful to the point i couldn't sleep etc. I was convinced every time that things were kicking off and then they would suddenly go away. I also had diarrhoea and vomiting several times. It was very demoralising but it was due to baby moving down into the pelvis and when i did go into labour it was pretty quick possibly due to all babies preparation!

FirstTimeMumma · 04/09/2012 11:06

I thought i wrote back to this! Sorry potas. I think i might be on the same boat as you were! Just cant see bubs making an appearance anytime in the very near future. I know she is 3/5ths engaged, and midwife told me she doesnt expect her to go any further into my pelvis untill im in full blown labour? Who knows though. Not really in a huge rush to get her out to be fair, i can wait. Its more the thought of this pain for possibly another 4 weeks is daunting! Thanks for your reply!

Are you actually still constipated? I am a nurse and sometimes you can have diarreoah, or overflow as we call it, when you are constipated. They may need to send a stool specimen to see if you've picked up a tummy bug? Also have they tested your urine? And I don't just mean with the dipstick. They perhaps need to send a sample off as urine infections aren't always picked up on the dip stick tests.
I think I would go to the your GP. It may be a problem thAt isn't actually related to pregnancy that the pregnancy bods are missing.
It's probably just like the other posters suggest, And your body gearing up for labour but I would rule anything else out too.
Let us know how you get on and good luck Smile

FirstTimeMumma · 04/09/2012 14:01

Thanks for the great advice jakey! Thats exactly what i think ill do. Definitely have to get something done, just to rule out everything other than my body gearing up for labour:)

Just to update ladies, just back from GP. He said everything I'm describing is normal and is the result of the latter stages of pregnancy. Told me to take paracetamol (which i told him doesn't really give me any relief) and to try a tens machine. Other than that theres nothing hes concerned about as baby is happy and midwifes think im ok. Slightly disappointed not to have him tell me oh yes, this is what is wrong with you right enough! Im soooo over being pregnant if it is going to continue like thisSad

I did honestly feel very fed up with the whole business by the time I got to the last few weeks, I really feel for you, and somehow, although its reassuring to be given a clean bill of health from the doc, when you're feeling so rotten, it would be nice to have better reason for it... (in fact your post is reminding me what's probably in store in a couple of months with baby #2 Hmm!)
Do you get any respite in different positions? Any joy from a soak in the bath? Fill it up really high and cover the overflow with a facecloth to make it really deep!
Your baby might be so low it's hitting a nerve, or a bit more pressure on your pelvis might be lessening the flow in terms of poo, and bypass diarrhoea like jakey said.
Any joy with different positions? Sitting on a birthing ball, rocking a bit, or on all fours to take the pressure off your nether regions?

FirstTimeMumma · 04/09/2012 22:50

Couldn't have said it better myself running! Hit the nail on the head. Ive found lying over the ball and letting my bump hang for a bit helps. The hot water bottle is also my best friend atm!! Ill give the bath a try again, little apprehensive as the last time i went for one i had to get out really quickly to jump on the looBlush thanks for the advice! Much appeciated. Grin
