30 weeks and no more scans? Is this right?

Just checking really. Seen a lot of posts where ppl say they've found out at a scan that fluid levels are low/baby weight is x/ baby size is x etc. However, I've been told that from now I will only see the midwife at 33 weeks, then every 2 weeks from there on. No scan. Just blood taking, urine testing, measuring my stomach etc. (I asked midwife about baby weight for eg and she said you'll find out when she comes out!!!)

My question is, how come some people seen to have scans in the third tri and others are not offered them?

(I have just paid for a private scan, had last week, and everything looked normal which is great, but just worried I'm missing something here that I should have!?)

i only had 1 scan with each pregnancy kids are 8 and 16 now

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 03/09/2012 16:20

It is unusual in UK I think, to have more than 2 scans. Normally these are at 12 and 20 weeks.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 03/09/2012 16:21

I never had a scan past 20 weeks, they are only done if there are concerns re one thing or another Smile

MousyMouse · 03/09/2012 16:21

NHS only offers scans after the 'big' scan at 20w only if there are problems flagged.

Solo · 03/09/2012 16:24

I think it's only if they have any concerns about your baby that they do further scans.

I didn't have any extra scans with my Ds, but with Dd I had one at about 34/36 weeks because I had an over active thyroid and they were checking her growth as I was on meds.

TittyWhistles · 03/09/2012 16:27

I had scans every week with my last dc. I had polyhydramnios so this was how they measured the fluid levels.

It was nice and reassuring to see the baby but it was a ball ache getting up to the hospital every Monday morning when I was massive.
I'd much rather have been boringly normal and not had the scans tbh.

BlueMoon74 · 03/09/2012 16:27

Ok thanks all phew! Sounds like it's normal/standard procedure then. (First baby - can you tell!) A colleague is also pg, 2 weeks ahead of me, and she has another 2 scans booked - but I didn't feel I could ask why/how come. (and she's been speaking as though that's what I should have to!)

I think 12 and 20 weeks is standard. Additional ones are only offered if issues are flagged up as far as I know.

TittyWhistles · 03/09/2012 16:28

Every week after about 30 weeks til the birth that is!

EdMcDunnough · 03/09/2012 16:31

There can be medical reasons why some people need them/are offered them, but normally it's 12 and 20 weeks (ish) or else some places they do them at 17 weeks and that's it - won't even tell you the sex unless you pay to go private.

headfairy · 03/09/2012 16:33

The only additional scans I had were one I insisted on because the mw didn't believe me when I told her ds was breech and quite a few extras for dd because she was measuring small, and then when I went two weeks over to see how my placenta was looking.

HappyCamel · 03/09/2012 22:05

I had additional scans due to GD combined with a small baby, which is sometimes a sign of placenta problems. Generally you'll only need one after 20 weeks if there is an indication of a problem?

emts · 04/09/2012 07:21

In Australia your last scheduled scan is at 20 weeks.

With my last pregnancy I had one at 34 weeks as my placenta was low lying. With this pregnancy I have had weekly scans from 30 weeks due to excessive fluid levels - detected due to me measuring large for dates.

As the others said, it's normal. I've had lots more scans, and you're welcome to them if you want the condition that comes with them Grin

Just wanted to pick up though on saying no blood, urine, measuring etc. Your MW should do that. Every MW appt I get urine tested and blood pressure. At 32 weeks I think there was blood tests. And I get measured every time. And heart beat listened too. If anything was abnormal that's what would trigger other action, such as scans. That's every 2 weeks at mo, 34 weeks.

Sastra · 04/09/2012 16:52

It also depends on your trust. Where I live you have a scan at 12, 20 and 32 weeks (which is fab).

FatimaLovesBread · 04/09/2012 17:30

I have a scan at 32 weeks, but that's because I had IVF so they do a growth scan (new NHS policy in my trust)
I know of other people having scans but of those I know of they have "problems" i.e. twin pregnancy, gestational diabetes, BMI over 30 and measuring large for dates.
Otherwise I had bloods taken at 28 weeks, then I have the midwife appointments at 31,34,36,38 and 40 weeks where urine is tested, blood pressure measured and baby palpated and measured

AnitaBlake · 04/09/2012 17:36

I have scans quite a lot but I had pregnancy induced hypertension last time and a low birth weight baby. Nothing showing abnormal this time thankfully, but there wasn't last time at 30weeks either.

Thechick · 04/09/2012 18:19

I think it depends on the hospital that your midwife is associated with. The hospital I'm with gives scans at 12 wks 22wks and 32wks as standard.

applecrumple · 04/09/2012 18:25

I'm due to have my 8th scan tomorrow but I'm consultant led

minipie · 04/09/2012 19:09

I'm having 2 more scans after the 20 week one but only because a) I have an underactive thyroid (can cause small baby) and b) I have an umbilical cord issue spotted at 20 week scan which can also cause small baby.
