Diarrhoea and cramping at 23 weeks?

23 weeks with DC 2, I vomited last night at about midnight, then (tmi, sorry!) was in the loo for about four hours with diarrhoea. Haven't had any more diarrhoea but I've now been having lower abdo cramps on and off all night and day, like mild contractions I would describe them.
I never felt Braxton Hicks contractions with my first but I was under the impression that they were painless so I'm now a bit worried, hmm.
My pregnancy has been totally low risk up to now and I'm hoping for a home birth so don't want to go ringing the midwife for every little thing if it's just normal, but panicking that I've given myself salmonella or listeria or something, ( although DP and DD are ok) or that I'm in premature labour Sad
I know I'm probably panicking over nothing but do you think I need to ring the midwife or just man up and wait it out for a bit longer?

Poor you Sad. I'm no expert but would say that it sounds more like mild food poisoning than premature labour but I would call the midwife and ask her about it. If it is food poisoning they may want to see you anyway, eg to give you a blood test to check which type (eg listeria or not) or to prescribe antibiotics. No harm in making a phone call.

Call midwife or go see a dr. Better safe than sorry and no one is gonna be cross with u for going!!! Always better to be turned away healthy than not go and have it be something serious!!! Pick up the phone and call. It's what they are there for :)

Ah, Thanks for the replies.
I'll ring the midwife as it seems I wouldn't be overreacting by doing so

I had what I thought were ctx last week - lower bump, no diarrhoea but a lot of crampy pain and they were coming every sort of 15 minutes for a few hours.

They told me to come in which I did, but they only checked obs and didn't attach a monitor or anything - and they eased off, and I went home before the Dr got round to us.

They said contractions are all over - including the top of the bump - so not to worry, I think they were most concerned about doing a urine test in case it was a UTI.

So don't panic, I think listeria is usually more full on that what you describe, it sounds like a stomach upset, but do call them just for reassurance. Hope you are properly better soon x

i had it with my dc3 literally all the way through my pregnancy but it eased off right toward the very end...never had it with my other two as i was constipated with the other two!!........just remember to drink lots of fluids.

Update- i rang midwife and she thought it might be dehydration causing the cramps so have been sipping Ribena and waiting to see if it eases. They weren't too worried and said it is unlikely to be anything serious but i'm glad I rang. I'll ring back if the cramps carry on, though.

Oh that's good news. I thought I was dehydrated, too, when I had it - I have heard that this can make your uterus cramp more, or you just feel it more or something.

BH contractions are normal throughout, and can be really uncomfortable (mine hurt sometimes quite badly) so try not to worry.

minipie · 03/09/2012 16:52

Ah right, yes I have definitely read that dehydration can make braxton hicks more likely, so that fits. BH (in my few weeks' of experience!) are not painful but kind of uncomfortable.
