silly question — what do you count as a movement ?

When I'm monitoring my baby's movements I'm never sure what counts and I'm getting all confused! Do you only count the big kicks, punches and wiggles, or do you count all movements, like little twitches, flickers, gentle kicks and nudges? I know I'm not meant to count hiccups but not sure about everything else!

Oooooh good question!!! I count everything but not sure if that is right or wrong.

Looks like I am sitting here waiting with you for an answer on this one Smile

I'm just checking in on this one too as I don't know either!

i count everything, but saying that i dont really count at all. as long as i have felt something in the last few hours i try not to worry.

How far on are you and are you getting plenty wriggles?

justonemorecake · 01/09/2012 10:39

I'm 30 weeks. I get plenty of little taps and gentle wiggles, but baby doesn't seem to do many really strong kicks or punches. So I'm just wondering if I can count all the gentle little nudged and wiggles I get,or just the few big kicks!

I couldn't really understand what they want for the Count the Kicks campaign... do you pick a one hour session each day and count that one hour session only? Do you pick several one hour slots, but keep them the same each day? Change it up? I dunno!

They say you should count kicks, swooshes, punches, flips and turns... but I've no idea how to distinguish between some of those.

So I count every movement, but only when they are stand-alone. So for two taps in quick succession (like a "knock, knock, who's there" kind of feeling) I just count as one movement. I made myself a table divided into hourly slots and do a tally count on that. I also denote the letter "H" when he has had hiccups that hour.

If I'm out or busy, I don't count, just keep aware that movements are occuring, but he's much quieter when I'm being active anyway.

I noticed a big change at around the 34 week mark when the movements became a lot stronger and obvious just from looking at my belly (looks a bit like a kitten squirming underneath a blanket - eurgh - and has changed from a "how cute" to an "oooh, uncomfortable, could you stop doing that now please?").

My little boy seems to be a massive wriggler whenever I sit down in front of the TV, which is increasingly frequent these days. He always blows the tallies sky high during couch time, so I just write "+" next to the tally.

I've been counting everything apart from hiccups, although saying that I don't actually 'count'. My baby has quite a strong routine and is very active so unless her routine changes I don't worry (it has a few times and I've been monitored, seems to have signalled a change in routine) Now 37 weeks and movements are much 'smaller' in that shes run out of room for kicks and flips.

Bellaboo123 · 02/09/2012 07:52

Stupid question...how can you tell when LO has hiccups? Don't think I've noticed that!!!

seabuckthorn · 02/09/2012 16:59

Another stupid question: when do you count? Same time every day, how long for?

applecrumple · 02/09/2012 20:50

I count everything (apart from hiccups). Btw hiccups feel a bit like a slow heartbeat - very easy to distinguish from actual kicks. Mine gets them if I eat beans! I have a "count the kicks" bracelet which goes up to 12 (you just slide the counter every time baby moves) & then I write down n a notebook. E.g "12 movements between 8am & 9am" & then jus carry on throughout the day

SweetPea3 · 02/09/2012 22:59

I don't want to confuse things even more, but my obstetrician said not to count the kicks - rather to just rely on what is normal for your baby and to call the hospital if there is less movement than you would normally expect.

Not silly at all :)
