GD - how long after birth until I can eat chocolate??

I have gestational diabetes which I've found torturous as I'm a chocoholic. Also my baby is breech so I'm going to have a c section in 12 days.

How soon do I have to wait after birth before I can eat a slice of chocolate cheese cake?????? I'm going to try breastfeeding, will eating chocolate effect what is in my milk?

Straight away!! I had sweets packed in my hospital bag all ready (would have had choc but it was very warm and would have melted!)

You do need to eat/drink more than usual for bf, and obviously it's better to eat a healthy balanced diet ... But I ate a ridiculous amount of cake in the early weeks - I really craved sugar.

Straight away! But I found it took a week until I felt properly normal, mind you, hard to tell how much of that was just normal post pregnancy hormone changes etc.

Broadly, your diet can affect the taste of your milk but not the nutritional content so you can be pretty relaxed about it. Alcohol does get on to breastmilk but in by small quantities and your body metabolises it quite quickly so most people will have a glass but not get blotto, you'll need to work out what you're comfy with.

If you want to bf then feed as soon as you can after baby is born because it will need sugar to mop up the extra insulin it has and prevent low blood sugar. I fed while my stitches were done, it was a great distraction.

Yay I love your answers, thanks for taking the time to reply. I will pack some treats but won't go overboard. I've managed to lose half stone in last month so don't want to undo all the hard work!! Choc cheese cake is defo top of my list though, with ribena. Can't wait!! X

Oh, I'm so with you on this! I have a list of things I'm desperate to eat!! I want a giant slice of white, crusty bread and then some cake and then some chocolate once my little one is here! If I'm in hospital a while then DH had better be prepared to pop to the local Sainsbury's pretty damn quick Wink

Inadvertently this GD diet has also made me lose my pudginess and turn into a slim preggers woman with just a bump - the only positive side effect - so I must be careful not to put it all straight back on!

Hmmm... isn't chocolate a low GI food and therefore not too bad on your GD? I have still indulged in eating something like 2 squares of chocolate every now and then. Am I being naughty? I do admit, I'm not a chocoholic and can take it or leave it. My hardest was giving up regular coke. Mmmmm... But maybe my tastebuds will change and I'll find it off-putting once I'm allowed to have it?

LylaLils · 01/09/2012 12:21

Oh I don't know? I thought choc was off limits. Plus the only problem with that would be...I can't just stop at one or two squares of chocolate. I'd have to gorge and I wouldn't be able to stop. So I have to completely abstain! I keep telling myself it will taste all the sweeter once I can have as much as I like without guilt! Yes, also looking forward to white crusty bread...with a ton of pate.

Haha. It's all the simple things in life... mmmm... a fresh loaf of white tiger bread that's still steaming. Now we're talking!

Wow this diet is a cruel way to end a pregnancy. I go to bed hungry most nights as I am so sick of eating cheese and pickles. And I'm too scared to eat anything else in case my blood sugar goes up. I'm terrified of eating. And so sick of not being able to just eat what I want when I want. 6 days till c section...can't come quick enough...
