Hi all

I am going to do NCT classes in my area (Twickenham) in Dec, I think it is two weekends instead of weekday shorter sessions. I hope it won't make a difference but does anyone know if I am going to feel silly going alone? I will be bringing up baby alone (baby father, man-child has disappeared) and don't want to lug my friends along who have already been through NCT themselves and have their own children to look after. I don't have a close mum etc and think I will just attend on my own but just worried I will feel like a leper.

You will not be a leper, IME nct are far more welcoming to every lifestyle than people think. If you want to email the course organiser in advance, then she will also be able to assure you. I did, with regards to something else and it put my mind at rest, and in fact is doing an extra bit on the thing I was worried about now.

I don't think you'll stand out at all or find it awkward but there are parts of the course where it's handy to have someone with you if even just to giggle with. Watching an NCT instructor gyrate like a pole dancer with one leg up on a chair demonstrating birthing positions was a particular high point for us !
Do you have someone lined up to be with you during labour, that could maybe come with you ? I could remember little or nothing of the pros and cons of the drugs etc when it was all happening and really relied on my DH then. He still has a far better idea of what went on than I did.

I don't think my group would have batted an eyelid. We've been really supportive of each other and still meet up often, two of us are now expecting our second kids. It's a great way to make friends, have people to spend time with after the baby arrives and also people your baby knows. One of them babysits for me frequently and lots of us helped out another one when her DH worked abroad for 6 weeks.

Thanks for this! I'm going tomorrow. Alone with similar situation. Feel more reassured now x

thanks happy camel. Think I will brave it alone- might as well get used to it and remember women are great in these situations helping and supporting each other x

I've just finished on of the wknd NCT courses. My DH was working so I took my mum, there was another woman there on her own out of 8 couples so I wouldn't worry about going alone at all. Great way to build up a support network too.
