Anti-D postnatal jab if having home birth

Following on from another thread about anti-d jabs. Does anyone know how the midwives get results from baby's cord blood if you have a home birth? When I was in hospital for DS the blood was tested and within the hour the result came back as Rh- and no need for postnatal jab. Surely it will take a long time for blood to get to path lab at hospital and then how long after will I have to wait if baby is Rh+ to have the jab? Is there a time limit?

You have 72 hours to receive the jab, I'm neg and planning a home birth. Apparently you usually have to go in for baby's postnatal check in my area so they'd test jab me then. If postnatal check is done at home they'll bring the anti d with them. The midwife takes the blood to the hospital along with the placenta etc for disposal, but it depends on your area's set up, I guess.

I'm really glad I read this. Am also planning a Home Birth and hadn't thought of it at all! Will ask next monday at MW appointment.

I am neg and had a home birth last time (planning another for Oct) the mw will take blood sample direct to hospital after leaving you and results will be available in time for you to have your anti-d if needed. Don't worry it's all part of the usual procedure. My baby was positive and I had to go in to hospital for anti-d within 72 hours. All straightforward, no problems.

Ooh thanks guys, I know its early (12 weeks) but want to be prepared and think about every last detail so I'm just concentrating on one thing - pushing out a baby!
