I'm suffering from very bad sickness and am at 11 weeks - my gynae wrote me a prescription for Ondenestran (I think called Zofran in US) but I'm really nervous to take anything - especially as I read online that it hasn't been subject to clinical trials re. pregnancy? Any advice or experience gratefully recieved! Thanks!

I had horrific all day sickness. I was prescribed pheragan no idea if that's spelt right. It was fantastic it used to stop the sickness and I'd be sleepy I'd get a great night sleep too. That was pretty amazing in the later stages when a huge bump would keep me up all night. I was lead to believe thats one of the stronger ones. It's also used as a antihistamine or mild sedative for operations (in much larger doses I'd guess). Me nor ds seem to have suffered any ill affects from taking them practically the whole pregnancy Smile

Hi OP, I am 11 weeks too and taking Zofran. After trying everything i find it to be the best one. My obs. didn't seem concerned at all about me taking it. It's very common in the US.
It is really helping me but 1 tip, start taking some high fibre supplement because the constipation side effect is horrendous. (but not bad enough that I stop taking them)

None of the drugs they prescribe for sickness have been through clinical trials in pregnancy as it's not ethical to do medical trials on pregnant women. But they have been shown to be effective and not harmful through general use. I was prescribed cyclizine when pregnant and it was fantastic.

I'd take the drugs.

As above - there is a lack of clinical trials but anti-emetics are widely given in practice and have not been known to cause any problems. I'm a GP and I took cyclizine myself earlier in this pregnancy. Some women find anti-emetics great, others find they do nothing for their sickness (I was in the latter camp). One tip though, is that the combination of anti-emetics and acupuncture seems to work a treat for a lot of women. One of the partners in my practice does acupuncture for pregnancy sickness only (we don't get funding to provide it as a service so you may find your doctor doesn't offer it, but you could find a local acupuncturist) and we see really good results from it.

One tip: try drinking iced water with a slice of lemon - the ice and the citrus really helped me when I was struggling to get fluids down.

I've taken Zofran from about weeks 7-11 with this pregnancy (my third - didn't get m/s in the first two!!). I live in the States - yes, it is widely prescribed here. I've also done independent research into its safety (which is very hard to do as clinical trials are obviously few and far between during pregnancy) but from what I've found (and the study was a very small sample size of only 176 pregnancies) there have been no side-effects above the norm: i.e. they have not been able to link the taking of this drug to any increased incidence of birth defects. Hope this reassures you!
