Hi

I had polyhydramnios ... My fluid level at its highest was 44cm and that was at about 30 weeks. I understand that is when the fluid levels peak.

I had an amnio reduction and they removed 2 litres of fluid which brought if down to 32cm. I am now 36 weeks and it's at 20cm and not of concern.

As for how it felt, my skin was stretched to the max. My stomach was a shiny beacon and although I don't have stretch marks (not sure why) it felt like my skin was tearing from the inside.

I was measuring full term and looked like I was about to give birth or having a litter of babies. I had muscle separation under my rib cage which caused really bad mid back pain. Unfortunately I also had an unstable pelvis and sciatica which wasn't helped by all that fluid.

Just before the amnio reduction I could barely move with most of my time spent laying down. Afterwards I felt like a new person. I could move again and my back pain was bearable.

So I am probably on the extreme end ... I am sure if they were concerned about you they'd action it straight away. They may just want to monitor it - I am being monitored weekly. The fluid does naturally reduce as you go along.

All the best and try not to worry!

:)

I had it and although I didn't feel any different, my belly looked really stretched and round.

I was monitored every week and also had extra scans to measure the fluid. (nice to see baby regularly!)

One reason for the polyhydramnios can be that your baby's kidneys aren't functioning properly, and it's also a side effect of gestational diabetes.

If you are borderline though, It will probably return to normal without intervention.

I have mildly elevated levels too - am currently 33 weeks and feel like i'm carrying a bowling ball around rather than a baby! I had it with my first pregnancy too and went into labour at 34 weeks so am hoping to go a little longer this time. I've heard of lots of people who have had it though and go full term or the levels of fluid just start to taper off so i wouldn't worry too much. I'm off to have another scan next week to check how the levels are - might be worth requesting extra scans too if you are concerned?
