Right what are you all eating?

I have been staring a the Ocado website for about an hour and made little progress.

I wonder what everyone is eating? (particularly in the last trimester - Im 34 weeks)

I am bloody knackered, live on my own and not really up for spending hours in the kitchen. I'm just rubbish with food - I always have been (previous history of anorexia)

At the moment I am eating the SAME thing everyday and think maybe I ought to broaden my horizons - if only slightly.

At the moment I am eating:

Breakfast: Not a bloody lot though trying to have porridge, skimmed milk and tbsp of flaxseed.

Lunch: Huge egg white Omelette with tomatoes & courgette & spinach & mushrooms.

Snacks dotted throughout the day: Granny Smith apple, half a pot of cottage cheese, cup of strawberries, ten almonds.

Supper: Innocent Veg Pot - Aubergine one - its the only one I like.

Before bed: Small pot of Total 0% fat yogurt.

I'd be very grateful for some suggestions..! (I'm veggie btw)

I also am waking up at about 3.30am very hungry!

Thank you in advance x

Sounds like you're eating very healthily, but not enough. Have something else with your evening meal or before bed, maybe some crackers?

Other simple meal ideas - soup, spaghetti Bolognese (buy a dolmio sauce and quorn mince, that'll make a few portions at once), beans on toast.

I would think a bit more fat wouldn't do you or the baby any harm? Like cheddar cheese, full fat yoghurts? More carbs to fill you up - toast for brekkie, jacket potato for supper? Some nice cake? Smile

Blimey, I'm not surprised you're waking up hungry - I'm eating nearly double that & am still starving! Ok, I'm not a veggie, but was one for 9 years so tend to eat mainly veggie stuff anyway. Maybe switch to a whole egg omelette - the iron n th egg yolks will help keep you a bit more energised. I'm having hard boiled egg sarnies for brekkie. Im eating lots of fruit & have a daily small pack of low fat crisps, along with digestive biscuits & yoghurt for snacks. Also, prob a bit more chocolate/cake than I probably should do! Pasta is good for tea & you could maybe make soups for lunch?

Seems to me that maybe that's not quite enough, though lots of good veg. We need 300 cals extra a day in this trimester I think..

I am also trying to be healthy, though I have cake and chocolate every day Blush.

Same as you, I have porridge in the am with raspberries and a mix of nuts, flaxseeds and goji berries. I have semi-skimmed milk now. Used to have skimmed.
Lunch today I had a toasted wrap with spinach, tuna, kidney beans and cheese with homemade guacamole, salsa and sour cream.
Then for dinner I'll have salmon, brown rice and salad. I drink peppermint tea, juice and water. And the odd latte.
I also had a banana and rye toast with marmite mid morning. And I'll definitely have some sort of chocolate tonight.

So that's a bit fishy for you, but what about making a big veggie curry with chickpeas for protein with brown rice? Either indian spices or thai. And I wouldn't cut the yolks out of your omelette - I know that's where the fat is but it's good fat I believe.

Or you could do a veggie shepherd's pie or moussaka using lentils or pulses and veg with a sweet potato topping. Make your own veggie burgers?

I think you and I are both at the stage when maybe we should be making things to freeze for when the baby arrives too (I am 36 weeks).

I eat about the same amount but more variety perhaps. I'm not a vegetarian but eat mostly vegetarian food, with a good amount of fish. I also feel I should be eating more but I don't fit that much food in my poor 36 week body any more! I appreciate with your history of eating disorders there may be some difficulty in "allowing" yourself to eat as well. Or maybe not, don't want to assume.

I think you could certainly stand to eat more. Perhaps try switching around WHEN you eat (i find I can eat more earlier) and switch the low-fat stuff to full-fat stuff. Nuts and oils and butters are good fats, they are your friend. As are egg yolks. You're eating very clean (which is good!) but some treats won't hurt either.

Breakfasts - I swear by eggs, and keep the yolks, the yolks are really good for you - I have poached or boiled with toast, and some fruit and yoghurt. Peanut butter is good on toast too

Lunches - sandwiches, porridge, jacket potato, big salads of whatever I have in

Dinners - if you're not getting protein from meat/fish probably try and aim for some pulses or nuts or cheese at this point.

I am ravenous first thing so eat big breakfasts, the rest of the day I find it hard to eat, and I've never been much of a snacker. I eat more fruit these days, and sometimes sweet things. Vanilla ice cream and decaf coffee at night is a regular thing :)

Today I had - boiled egg with soldiers, apple, yoghurt / homemade pancakes with ham and mustard and salad, piece of cake / snack - piece of cheese / roasted squash, onion, bacon, lettuce, cheese salad. Then a yoghurt. This was a light day, I am finding it hard to eat enough too.

Are you off work yet, or free in the day at all? I find shopping for fresh food on foot is a nice way to get in some walking and keep my foodie-senses active. I go regularly but don't buy much each time. If you're more short of time wholewheat pasta is a good healthy quick food, have it with some olive oil, cheese, tomatoes, olives, etc. Muesli is good for mornings too, would make a change from porridge, I like it with fruit and yoghurt.

take care, nearly there xx

You are a lovely lot. Thank you so much for such good responses!

I am loving some of the ideas and can't wait to give them a go.

I hear what you're all saying about the egg yolk - i'm on to it! I will also try adding some more carbs - I like the sound of peanut butter on toast. And good old Jacket potatoes - forgot about them! And sweet potatoes - yum!

I am off work now, so I can go and get fresh things regularly. It's a good idea.

Right, back to the Ocado site for more inspiration and to create a shopping list!

Thanks again. Very interesting reading x

i've just eaten a chinese chicken curry after eating salad and fish cake/ spag bol /chicken all week. I had to have it so thought-just go with it. Was yummy but only ate half the portion. MIght have some natural yoghurt and fruit now to make up for the unhealthy main :)

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 29/08/2012 20:05

More nuts
Bananas
Flapjacks
Full fat milk
Seeded bread
Cheese salad sandwiches
Yogurts with mixed seeds on top
Cheese and beans on toast

And I think you should bulk up your supper as its not a lot. Maybe add a pudding of some sort?

Even if it's a slice of golden syrup cake, an individual Kipling cake, toasted tea cake, couple of Jaffa cakes, bananas and custard, rice pudding?

I think you're eating very healthy but I don't think it's enough-depends on your portions. But you shouldn't be waking up hungry.

And a hot chocolate or Horlicks or ovaltine before bed with a biscuit or flapjack?

All the best x
