After getting a Bfp did you go to the doctor? Took a test on Saturday - positive! So I think I am about 4 weeks. What happens at the first visit?

Thanks so much!

I saw my GP about a week after getting a positive HPT. He congratulated me and wrote the referral to the hospital to get me into the system. Nothing more than that. A couple of weeks later I received a letter from the hospital with my booking in and first scan appointment.

Oh, can congratulations on your BFP :)

EarnestDullard · 28/08/2012 14:20

Congratulations! I saw the GP soon after getting a BFP, as referral to the hospital can take a while, but there's no huge rush really. The doctor will probably just take some details on your dates and refer you to whichever hospital you want to book in to; they may do another pg test to confirm, but home pregnancy tests are fairly reliable these days so they don't always bother.

I think it depends on your area as each has a slightly different system. Give your GP a call and they'll let you know the process. Congrats!

First of all - Congratulations!!!!!!

I'd suggest you call the surgery and check their procedure... It'ss different everywhere!

In some places you see the GP who refers you to the midwife but I think in a lot of areas you now self refer to a midwife who arranges a 'booking in' appointment at around 8 weeks. They'll see you for an hour or more, take lots of information from you about your/your partner/family health, make sure you're on folic acid, take bloods, give you advice and start referal for your 12 week scan.

HTH!!

You don't usually need to go to the GP. Book an appointment with the midwife based at your surgery, the receptionist may give you more details. This is the booking in appointment and usually is at around 8-10 weeks. She/he will fill in lots of paperwork with you, take some blood, ask for a wee sample and take blood pressure and weight and height (to work out your bmi). There will be lots of questions about your health, current and past and family health issues, they will explain the processes involved, how often you see your midwife, telephone numbers to call, scan dates etc. Just make sure you are taking folic acid and not drinking and smoking and then it's just a wait until your appointment.

ZuleikaD · 28/08/2012 14:24

I didn't go to the GP, I just made a booking-in appointment with the midwife.

MyDaydream · 28/08/2012 14:34

I called the GPs at about 5 weeks and asked for a booking in appointment, I had an appointment at 7 where she introduced herself, sent the referals for my scan and took some bloods probably a 10 minute appointment, then my booking in at 8 so she could give me the blood test results and fill out my notes which took about 30/40 minutes. Didn't see the GP, didn't see the point.

Thanks for all the replies. Did not expect so many! Managed to get a last minute appointment today. Took blood pressure wee sample weight and height. Need to go back for blood tests later on in the week! So excited but also trying not to get too excited at this early stage! Not letting hubby tell anyone yet
