Pregnant while having a Colposcopy & Lletz treatment anyone?

JemimaPuddle · 28/08/2012 10:40

I had a smear test about 5 weeks ago which showed severe changes. I had a colposcopy & Lletz treatment to get rid of the pre cancerous cells 2 weeks ago.

I started bleeding 2 days after the Lletz and I am still bleeding now. The leaflet they gave said you can bleed for 4 - 6 weeks afterwards. I started feeling very nauseous a week ago and did a positive pregnancy test yesterday & again this morning.

If I fell pregnant last time we had sex I am 5+2.

Has anyone been in a similar position and it all been ok? I have called the clinic where I had the treatment who passed me to EPU and I have a scan booked for next Tuesday to check all is ok.

I guess I'm just looking for reassurance in meantime. It's going to be a long week.

I had a LLETZ (a rather extensive one under GA) while I had a womb infection as the surgeon couldn't wait any longer (the cells were changing far too rapidly to take chances) in October.

I fell pg while using contraception in December but didn't find out until Feb as I was still bleeding heavily from the op so didn't know what was period what was post-op bleeding.

The bleeding stopped after thrush treatment in March (I had a thrush infection following the heavy duty anti-biotics to knock out the womb infection and the thrush was eating away at the scar tissue so it couldn't heal) and hasn't restarted.

I am now 36w and baby is fine. I had a fair few extra scans including one to check my cervix wasn't dilating at 18w which luckily it wasn't.

Did they not do a pg test before doing the LLETZ (they did me) or would that have been too soon to find out?

I really hope the bleeding eases up for you soon but even if it doesn't, it doesn't necessarily mean you are miscarrying (the small baby currently removing my ribs is proof of that!) it may just be your scar tissue is taking longer to heal for some reason. Has your GP swabbed for infections/thrush?

All the best and I hope the next week goes quickly for you.

Hi jemima I had a LLETZ for CIN 3 about 2 years ago. I bled for around 3 weeks afterwards, but it was old brown blood and not very heavy, sometimes it was really watery too.

I think the problem you will have will be your follow-up, you usually get called back for repeat colposcopy about 3 months after your LLETZ, but obviously you can't have this being pregnant! Just make sure your gynaecologist knows you are pregnant so they can arrange your follow up after you have your baby.

I am also currently pregnant, and had an early scan at 6+5. Didn't see much but a tiny blob with a heartbeat flickering away, just so you know what to expect! The scan was abdominal, not vaginal.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope the scan goes well! Try not to worry too much!

BadgerFace · 28/08/2012 19:00

My Leetz wasn't as close as yours to my pregnancy starting but I am sure that the procedure will be that they monitor you more closely and react appropriately if any treatment is needed. In my case they are internally scanning me every two weeks to check the length of my cervix (which thankfully is currently long!). If at any point they think it is shortening then they have said they will put a stitch in which I understand is a fairly normal procedure. Am currently 20 weeks and no issues so far.

Good luck and try not to panic, you will be well looked after.

And as Little Lolly says early scans show a little flicker which is weird and amazing all at once!

Hey,

I had colposcopy and lletz for CIN2/3 a while before getting pregnant which is no use to you at the minute. i did want to tell you, however, to watch out for infection now especially if you are pg. i got an infection after mine which my consultant said was quite common and it was easily cleared up but i would hate an untreated infection to cause any harm to bubs.

Good luck, hope all works out for you.

I had lletz (cin3) and got pregnant the month after. Dr said it was fine to ttc straight away so we did!
All was fine with pregnancy and birth. Delayed follow up though- was about 2-3 months after birth so getting on for a year after lletz (again was fine).

I didn't get any extra scans to check cervix length as told not needed after a single lletz treatment. I've since seen that some ultrasound clinics offer scans to check your cervix ('thisismy' is one)

But as I said you're not really at risk after 1 lletz (higher risk if cone biopsy or multiple lletz treatments)

JemimaPuddle · 29/08/2012 19:19

Thanks for all your replies.
I'm still worried as I was pregnant when I had it but feel much more reassured now.
Struggling with morning sickness which lasts all day and still bleeding but it is watery red/ brown so trying not to be too concerned.
Loads of other mixed emotions as this will be DC3 and not planned, DC1 is 2.5 and DC2 is 7 months, don't think I'm going to cope :(

Cope!! You'll cope fine - mums are super human, they juggle everything well (and still have time to beat their self up over not doing stuff well enough)

3 little uns close together, I imaging they'll have a lovely strong bond!!

Just wanted to say I had a similar situation and was fine with DS. That said (and I don't want to worry you but I wish I'd known), there is a lot of research showing that when you've had such procedures sometimes you have difficulty in the final stages of labour as scar tissue does not stretch as well. I had a few issues and am sure it was connected to this (labour fine until pushing when he was stuck for quite some time and needed intervention). It might be worth asking to have it put on your notes to make the hosp/ midwife aware of it.

As for coping, I'm sure you'll be fine and often such surprises are the best. I don't know anybody who's regretted having their child once they're here. Hope your sickness passes soon.

JemimaPuddle · 30/08/2012 20:28

Thanks Kafri that's a lovely way to look at it :)

Thanks Wiggy, I'll make sure it's put on my notes. Funnily enough DD1 got stuck as she was back to back & ended up with forceps & a full episiotomy. DD2 came flying out in 4 hours from start to finish. Hoping with 3 so close together it'll just be like a log flume!!

I had my scan today which just showed the gestational sac. The sonographer thinks I'm just to early OR will miscarry :(
Have to go back in a week for another scan.

Fingers crossed Jemima for too early.

Fingers, toes and anything else possible crossed for you. Keep us posted!xx

Hi, I have just found out I'm pregnant about 20mins ago and worried as I had my 2nd lletz under general 4 weeks ago. They did a preg test before and showed neg but been feeling nauseous and sick for around 3 weeks, still slight bleeding and now I'm worried that the treatment undertaken might cause problems. My last period was fine but I had started period day before hospital so had no idea I was pregnant. I had alot of bleeding after lletz as o think they had to remove quite alot of my cervix again.
Have you heard anything else jemimapuddle hope all is ok. Was this your first lletz? Was it under local/general I'm just worried now as doctors closed till Monday and so many questions.
Thanks. X

Wiggy29 · 07/09/2012 17:53

Could you try NHS Direct? I have my fingers and toes crossed for you jsw82.

jsw82 · 07/09/2012 21:24

Thanks, wiggy I'm going to call hospital on Monday morning as at least they have my notes and see what happens from there. Thanks. Xxx

JemimaPuddle · 11/09/2012 20:47

So sorry JSW, I have only just seen this. Hope you've managed to see someone? I rang the clinic where I had my Lletz who referred me to the Early pregnancy unit.

I had my follow up scan this morning and sadly there is still only the gestational sac there :( no yolk, foetal pole or anything.
I'm still not in pain & haven't bled for nearly a fortnight, still have morning sickness & loads of other symptoms.
I am having ERPC on Thursday, any advice on this?
