Pregnant with dc2 but really can't think of answer to this for dc1 as will be 8 years ago time dc2 is born:

I only have room in my nursery for either a raised single cabin bed (which is already in there) or a nursing chair- which would be most useful?

With dc1 I just had a nursing chair I breast fed in (well, a big comfy chair) but dp was a student at the time so didn't matter so much if his sleep was disturbed when I got up with baby etc. We have since moved house and dp works full time, I wondered if it would be more useful to have a singe bed so on the nights where dc wakes lots I can just sleep in there with him/her. Last time I breast fed until 9 months when I started back at work but this time I think it will be around 6 as we're hoping to possibly ttc again after that. I know the baby is in the room with us until a certain point but can't remember the age? I know baby may sleep through earlier but with dc1 he was only going that on a regular basis from around 12 months.

Anyway, if you had to pick, which would you keep in the room, a raised singe bed (about 3ft with a ladder up to it though baby could easily be lifted on before I climb up) or should I disassemble it and stick a chair in? Advice would be great.

In my personal opinion it would be the bed, i think for me and dh when we had dd our lives would of been alot easier if there was a bed we could slink onto when she woke up without waking the other up.

i am actually considering buying a sofa bed for new babies room so when dh goes back to work on the really awful nights he doesn't get disturbed.

The only thing with having to climb up the bed is what if you have a section? It will be a bit redundant if u do.

Nursing chair, definitely.

This time round I've got a full-size bedside cot so DC2 will be right next to me all night anyway and a nursing chair in the nursery for feeds during the day/settling if needed at night.

I'd say bed. I just bf in our bed when Ds was in a crib next to me and downstairs in the day (where can watch tv!) Dh used our spare bed when he went back to work to have one or two nights undisturbed sleep. It will be handy when your baby is older in case your having a bad night settling so you can sleep in the same room instead of back and forth. I've ended up sleeping on the floor next to the cot before now - not comfortable!!

Nursing chair. It's been one of the best bits of baby-related kit we bought and well worth the money. I have a Dutailier upholstered glider and it's a lovely, comfy chair that I use all the time for both children. I read stories to DS1 in it and last night DS2 was totally stuffed up and miserable and so I sat in the chair and rocked him to sleep in my arms. It's not just a nursing chair.

An even split! :o

But now I want a nursing chair!!
Have no room.though!

Louboo2245 · 28/08/2012 17:23

I had both, though it was a huge squeeze (just got rid of the chair) I didn't use the bed as much as I thought I would.
We didn't have room in our room for DD to sleep in our room, so I slept in her room, thinking it would help DH to have a full nights sleep. But he prefered me to sleep in our bed so left her on her own from about 3 months, but still used the chair for night feeds and settling.
Bit sad to be getting rid of the chair but there is no room for it and DD is sleeping through.

sw11mumofone · 28/08/2012 20:50

I would definitely go for the chair. I still use mine every evening and my DD is over 2. She has her bedtime story and milk in it before bed every night and loves it. I was pretty lucky as my dh's opinion was that my day job of being a full time mum was much harder than any full time career so he split all the night feeds with me and didn't want to sleep in a different room to get more sleep. I bottle fed though, so slightly different scenario. I bought a rocking chair that would be a lovely piece of furniture in any room so I could use it once I didn't need it in a child's bedroom anymore.

We had a sofa bed in DD's room - only ever used as sofa tho, never as bed. Think a chair would probably have been more useful. We did have a chair in our room when DS was born too, and I used that plenty.

This time round, we have got neither!

TinkerMaloo · 29/08/2012 08:07

bed!

RikersBeard · 29/08/2012 08:17

I would say bed. As the children will use it as they get older and you have it already. If it was me, I would put DH in it on work nights, then you are in your own room with baby in his cot (for 6 months at least is recommendation) and if you need to do a lot of feedin you and baby are comfy an safe in a double.

If baby sleeps through early you can review the situation!

DeathMetalMum · 29/08/2012 09:17

Is there any possibility of both? Maybe a nursing chair and might it be possible to just have the matress on the floor? I never really got the hang of feeding lying down and we lived in a flat so was easy for me to retreat to the sofa. That being said dd was in our room until 6 months anyway and was a difficult size to fit on the nursing chair we had as she was too long.

oscarwilde · 29/08/2012 12:06

Sofabed for definite. Ikea have some v good ones and with the right cushions you can mostly use it as a v large nursing chair/daybed :) The Beddinge sofa is very comfy and you can get large foam arm rests.
I'd ditch the high bed though - if you feed lying down you will be paranoid about going to sleep with the baby on the outside. Bad enough if they rolled off a low sofa bed but from 3ft...
