Hi is there a limit on how much milk you should or shouldn't drink whilst pregnant??
I enjoy a glass of milk whilst not pregnant but since been pregnant with my 3rd son all I have craved is milk and I can drink up to two and a half pints a day..
I was told that drinking milk could lead to a big baby but been as I have lost my appetite I didn't think it would make that much of a diffrence,, that and the fact I seem to have ok sized babys 1st been 8lb 8oz 2nd been 9 lb 1 1/2oz..

Sounds like bollocks to me :o I have a pint every day plus a large 500ml pot of yogurt and I'm really not concerned! Enjoy!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/08/2012 08:28

Ps baby needs massive amounts of calcium - 300mg a day, I read - and so craving dairy is totally understandable imho. Not having enough calcium is the leading cause of gum bleeding/problems in pregnancy apparently, as the baby will take what it needs from your stores instead of your diet. So if you're craving milk I say go with it :)

booksandchoc · 27/08/2012 08:31

I was drinking about 4 pints of milk a day in my last month of pregnancy due to heartburn, DD came out weighing 6lb 4oz.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 27/08/2012 08:37

I'm drinking lots of milk too. Most other things make me gip. Go for it, it's good for you Smile

InchyInchy · 27/08/2012 08:41

I'm drinking a glass now! :)

OlympickingMyNose · 27/08/2012 08:48

Exactly the same as booksandchoc, even the same birthweight!
My ds also got his teeth early. First around 4-5 weeks not sure if the milk consumption had anything to do with it

Gingerbreadlatte · 27/08/2012 08:58

Calcium should be obtained from a variety of sources not just dairy. Look up other sources.

If you drink milk avoid full fat as it very calorific. Skimmed milk actually has more calcium than ff milk anyway.

Moderation is the key imo. I've had one big baby and not taking my chances on diet leading to a second bigger one. 1st was 11lbs.

marriednotdead · 27/08/2012 09:06

Don't worry. When I was pg with DS, my milk craving had me on 6+ pints per day! It was like an unquenchable thirst. Ironically, I still had horrendous heartburn throughout so the milk went down with 100 Rennies per week!
He weighed 6lb 10oz at 37 weeks.

I can't see how scientifically skimmed milk would lead to a big baby. Full fat milk possibly as its 4% fat...?

backwardpossom · 27/08/2012 09:28

Total bollocks. I went through pints of milk every day with DS and he was born on his due date and weighed 7lb 7oz. I'm 12 weeks pregnant now and am craving milk again. Have already had a pint this morning, and am about to go have another glass... I'd be cheaper buying a cow...

jenbird · 27/08/2012 09:28

I drank loads of milk in my last pregnancy and ds came out at 9lb 1. My other 2 were 7lb 12. Probably nothing to do with it but a midwife did ask if I'd drunk lots of milk!

Gingerbreadlatte · 27/08/2012 10:27

Everyone is different and responds differently to pregnancy and it's effects !!

There is no right or wrong here!

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 27/08/2012 10:28

I'm not sure anyone's worked out what leads to big babies, anyway, have they?

Gingerbreadlatte · 27/08/2012 10:29

Though- worth thinking about what cows milk is designed for. Wouldn't be surprising if it was linked with big babies in some cases. Calves grow big pretty quick!

VeremyJyle · 27/08/2012 10:30

I'm ten weeks and haven't stopped craving milk - particularly cravendale probably in the mind I hadn't given a thought to the baby's weight gain though

hermionestranger · 27/08/2012 10:32

With both pregnancies I craved dairy. Milk, cheese, ice cream, milk and weirdly apples. I would easily drink 6+ pints a day.

Ds1 - 8lb 3oz at 39 weeks
Ds2 - 8lb at 40 + 12.

PeshwariNaan · 27/08/2012 10:52

Maybe try to drink organic as much as possible? But calcium's good for the baby and for your bones. I often have two yoghurts, cheese, milk every day.

Grumpybump88 · 27/08/2012 13:15

Thanks girls you really has put my mind a rest especially you lot who say you drank 6+ pints and had nice size baby's..
Think my intake may increase now I know it's not really going to lead to a monster of a baby lol.. X

Milk (and all dairy) is the best source of iodine in the uk too and we need more in pregnancy, and then even more when bf, and dairy is the best way to get it - shows that cravings have a purpose! Enjoy!
