I was just wondering if anybody could give me some advice
I have just brought newborn DD home but what does she sleep in?
The room is roughly 18-19 degrees and she is in a Moses basket. I have flat sheets, swaddle bags, gro bags and a wool blanket.
Help!!! Thank you

I think gro bags need baby to be over 10lb (mine did, check the labels & packaging). I would err on the side of less bedding - babies cry when they're cold, but when too warm will tend to sleep. It's safer to be too cool than too warm. A sheet and single layer of blanket should be plenty.

Congratulations! Smile

Sheet on the bottom, swaddle her and then wool blanket over the top.

Check her temperature periodically by feeling down the back of her neck.

Grobag is for a slightly older child.

readyforno2 · 25/08/2012 22:41

Vest, baby grow and swaddle blanket. Ds 2 is nine weeks and is a really hot baby, I've been putting him in a vest and grow bag but we sleep with the window open so room is a bit colder than yours. Best way to check is to feel babies chest. Congratulations!

pinkyp · 25/08/2012 22:42

Swaddle in blanket :) congratulations

HoopDePoop · 25/08/2012 22:44

Congratulations! Word of warning, she may not do much sleeping tonight Wink

For that temp, a sleepsuit and a cellular blanket is what I'd go for. But she might be happiest snuggled up with you. You are presumably feeling crap, shellshocked and knackered - but you will never, ever regret just letting her snooze on you tonight.

Envy I want a newborn now. DS at 8 months old seems like a grownup compared to those first terrifying, sleep deprived days! It passes so incredibly quickly.

HoopDePoop · 25/08/2012 22:48

Oh and grobags are ace but yy wait a month or two. Swaddling is great if you have the knack, really soothes them, makes them feel like still all snuggled in your uterus. It's basically making a fajita with baby as the filling, works a treat if they're crying for no reason in particular. Just keep it loose around legs and as tight as poss around the arms down straight by sides.

Sparklesandglitter · 25/08/2012 22:48

Well it's technically our second night but last night we were in hospital so I had the midwives to help! And no she didn't sleep much so I don't have high hopes for tonight lol!
Ok, I'm going to go for vest, baby grow and a wool blanket folded once, I doubt I'll sleep anyway so i'll be able to keep an eye on her
Thanks all Smile

Good luck, and the more cuddles the better, she's all new to the world! Smile

emsyj · 25/08/2012 22:54

The first night at home with DD was the worst in terms of sleep/unsettledness. She pretty much cried the whole night and DH and I were terrified of what we'd got ourselves into! After that she didn't really cry again for about 8 months. Grin

Wildwaterfalls · 25/08/2012 22:58

Ooh very Envy! Congratulations and good luck!

Not an expert on bedding - expecting DC1 - but your approach sounds sensible. Hope you all have a good night!

Put something you've been wearing today in with her (t shirt maybe?). She will smell your scent and may be more likely to sleep. You can also fill a 2l drink bottle with hot water from the tap and put that in the basket for 5 mins to warm it up (take it out before you put her in). I was given both of these top tips by my midwife after ds wouldn't settle in his basket, it seemed to do the trick.

Sparklesandglitter · 25/08/2012 23:42

They are some good suggestions atamber thanks
What about swaddling, I have some swaddling that are the proper Velcro types. Would she just wear a vest underneath or a baby grow too?
Thanks again!

readyforno2 · 25/08/2012 23:45

I had two swaddle Velcro things. I put ds in a vest and then into the swaddle sack thing but the room was around 23-24. Maybe a baby grow in the temperature you're talking about. As someone said earlier, better too cold than too hot

vamosbebe · 25/08/2012 23:47

Ours was a winter baby in a cold flat, so was in a grobag from the word go! He hated being swaddled, with a passion, and we were put off with stories about creeping blankets... seems went against the flow Hmm

CoolaSchmoola · 26/08/2012 00:05

Congratulations!

FSID have recently stated that a study has shown that swaddling increases risk for babies and therefore should be avoided as it can make babies too hot. Too cold is much better than too hot. Swaddling can more than treble the tog value of the item of bedding you use, so it's easy to overheat a baby.

Your best bet is to go with temperature and tog value.

15-19 degrees - vest, babygro and 2.5 tog worth of covers (sheet and a doubled over blanket.)

19-21 degrees - vest, babygro and 1 tog worth of covers (thin sheet, thin blanket - single)

22+ - vest, babygro, sheet.

24+ babygro, sheet.

After the first month babies no longer need an extra layer unless it's cold - so from around 20 degrees you don't need the vest and above 24 just a vest and sheet.

CoolaSchmoola · 26/08/2012 00:07

And don't check the babies temp by touching their hands (often cold for no reason!) or forehead.

Check the back of the neck - if it's damp your baby is too hot, remove a layer.

If you aren't sure feel their tummy or back - if they feel hot - remove a layer.

Sossiges · 26/08/2012 00:19

"fajita with the baby as the filling" Grin
nothing sensible to add, except best go by baby's temperature as Coola said and they won't sleep if they're too cold.

Sparklesandglitter · 26/08/2012 04:07

Thanks everybody, apparently feeding (very sore nipples!) and settling was a much bigger issue than blankets!all is quiet for now though so savouring the silence whilst I can!lol Smile
