Exactly as above. As time gets nearer, i'm getting a bit worried that i dont know the basics.

Am i right in thinking a vest, baby grow and light weight blanket - or is that too much?

I'm also planning on having him sleep in the carry cot part of the travel system - should i wash the lining section of it first?

Ta muchly. :)

When i baby due?

Generally, vest, babygrow and one layer of a blanket. For cold weather and as baby becomes more mobile consider a grow bag, especially for cold nights they are brilliant.

When you buy a grow bag they come with a little room thermometer and it tells you on the back what clothes to use with what sleeping back in what temperatures - if that makes sense! Obviously it's only a guide but I still use it for my ds who's nearly 9mo!

I'm just over 36 weeks. So not long left now. Eeeek!!!

i have this set here which includes a sleeping bag. so should i use that? I've just been to look at it too and there is a little guide on the back explaining how many layers depending on the room temp.
Is a celular blanket ok for covering up for sleeping too?

Cellular blanket great. I swaddled DS. He was a July baby and he wore a babygro and the swaddle blanket. As it got colder, I would add a vest underneath the babygro and if it was very cold, I'd put a blanket over him, too. He survived anyway... Wink You'll figure it out though, you will be able to tell if baby is too hot or too cold by feeling the back of their neck.

Check the sleeping bag to see if there's a minimum weight - there usually is I think to stop the baby slipping inside it. DD was wee and I don't think we could use one until about 3mo.

Be careful with sleeping bags for newborns - you need to ensure that they can't wiggle down inside it whilst theyre asleep - so make sure his or her head is bigger than the neck hole if that makes sense. I found swaddle clothes the best for newborn - we used the mother care miracle cloth or the wombies look quite good. They give the added bonus of making the baby feel secure - my ds would only sleep swaddled. Think we swapped to sleeping bags at 3 months.

Ds was born in late nov and would sleep in a vest, sleep suit and swaddle blanket. Cellular blankets are great for going over the top if it gets really cold. They're good because they're breathable if baby wiggles underneath.

Babies hands are often cold and do not necessarily mean that he is actually cold. A good way to test is to feel forehead and nose or back of neck. If they're cold then baby probably needs another layer. My ds seemed to get really blocked up nose if he was too hot - wish we figured that one out sooner - 3 months of not sleeping because he couldn't breathe properly!!

I think grobags can't be used under 9lb in case they slip in.

I would go for vest, babygrow and one cellular blanket to start with depending on how warm your house is. I am also 36 weeks and our house is averaging about 22 degrees at night at the moment.

ours varied so much - born in a hot but variable July, so went from vest only to vest/babygrow/cellular blanket , back to vest only over just a 2 week period.

Thanks Ladies, thats reassured me lots. Gonna look into the mothercare swaddle clothes and may invest in one ot two of those too.

Can I add a question? If I were to buy a grow bag for a newborn due end October what tog is it best to buy? I'm thinking of getting 1tog and just putting extra layers if he seems cold?

fairimum · 23/08/2012 22:19

i would def use a 2.5tog - have used 2.5tog, 85% of the time, if warm often with just a vest underneath, our 1tog has only been used for a few weeks x
