Hi all

DH flea sprayed the whole house last night with this really strong smelling spray (Cat = fleas in house all bloody summer!)

He sprayed all the upholstery, sofas etc, he even the matress and pillows, so could really smell it while trying to sleep last night.

Stank the whole house out and I asked him if he checked OK to use with pregnant person around, he said the back didn't say anything and sure it was fine but now I'm really worrying.

I worry so much now anyway at 33 weeks about movement, whether baby is OK etc. Anyone know if this is OK?

Can't be cross with DH as he just wanted to make sure the house was flea free when baby comes. (have also flead Cat by the way if anyone was going to ask that)

TIA :)

We had a flea infestation a while back when i was newly pregnant the stuff the vets gave us advised that the house should be fully aired for one hour after spraying and not to go in before then.

Have you fully aired it out? Flea spray os toxic to animals obviously, maybe best to call your midwife as all chemicals have risks

Skinny we had all windows/patio doors open etc but I was in the house the whole time, now panicking more as baby quite quiet today.

But having said that, panicked yesterday too - was late for work cus I was sucking on ice cubes and laying on my side trying to get her to move, got into work and hiccups/movement started immediately!

I don't know why I'm so anxious all of a sudden, feel really silly calling MW - do I need to just do it?

I think that you should give the mw a little call, use hormones as an excuse.

have you tried to Google the name of the spray your dh used to see what that crops up with?

i would say all would be fine but me personally was miles away until there was not even a sniff of spray, i am slightly hysterical over my 2nd precious born to be.

Before I found out I was pg with my son we had the council come out and spray the entire house because the cat had brought in fleas and they were everywhere...I felt nervous when I found out a few days later I must have been abt 6 weeks. My son is now 2 and fine. Try not 2 worry xx

Can't offer boy advice re baby, but I would suggest getting a new flea treatment for your cats - I used to use frontline religiously and then one year we had an infestation anyway - just couldn't understand it. The vet said that fleas have become immune to it so I switched to stronghold and haven't had a problem since... Hth

Spice17 · 24/08/2012 11:29

Cheers all, nene we use Frontline but may have to switch to Stronghold now, thanks!

I would change your sheets and wash them before you go to bed tonight and air your room thoroughly (leaving a window open all night).
Some of the flea sprays are fine - some aren't insofar as they have growth inhibitors and while not a nice thing to use around small children, I would think that the risk to your unborn child is fairly minimal. You need to check the list of ingredients to put your mind at risk.
There's been quite a few threads on here recently about fleas - tons around this summer. I can recommend the professional route if it continues. We had two sprays from Rentokil, two weeks apart @ £100 and haven't seen a flea since. They use insecticide to kill them stone dead and it is safe provided you air the house and remove your goldfish. The nice thing is that you don't have to keep all the windows and doors closed for 4 hours while it takes effect so you don't get that horrendous chemical stink when you come back as it's effectively airing from the point at which they stop spraying.

Hi OP, If you're worried call the midwife but i sprayed my whole house with indorex (from the vets) recently and all is well with the baby (now 31 weeks). however the spray we used is safe to use on bedding and upholstery so it might be worth reading the can really carefully, if you just have to air the house for an hour then it's probably fine.

we have used spot on with mixed success but i found out recently that you have to be really careful to get it directly onto the skin otherwise it doesn't work very well. i thought my cats were immune to it but i think i was just not applying it properly because this last dose seems to have worked really well, thanks to a couple of convenient bald patches on my cats neck.

this year had been terrible for fleas, both me and DS have been savaged repeatedly but the frontline and indorex combo seems to be working so far...

soon2bmumof3 · 25/08/2012 08:20

Ive had the same with frontline it's suddenly stopped working. Use advocate now from the vets and no probs so far. I'm sure your baby will be fine though but call the midwife as it will reassure you.

ItsMyLastOne · 25/08/2012 09:08

We've got a flea problem at the moment and DP has just ordered some bombs to set off, and got frontline combo for the dog. I hadn't even thought about it being unsafe while pregnant, I was just worried about DD being out of the house for as long as possible when he does it. I'll make sure I read the packaging now to check.

I'm sure you'll be fine OP but check with the mw if you're still worried.
