Just over 3 weeks left until I start maternity leave, and I'm seriously struggling to act like I give a shit about anything at work or have any motivation. I do like my job and the people I work with but I now have that wind down feeling and my brain is elsewhere....mainly making pointless lists and going on Mumsnet. Really hope they aren't monitoring my internet usage!

Roll on September 14th!!

Please tell me I'm not the only lazy cow one Grin

You start your leave on the same day as me. Only I'm a Teacher so have been on holiday for the last 4 weeks, then going back for two weeks before my maternity leave begins! smug

When are you due?

stowsettler · 22/08/2012 11:13

Haha, count yourself lucky! I don't go on maternity until the end of January, and I already can't be bothered! Work just feels so inconsequential now, and I'm supposed to be in a position of responsibility.

milli2512 · 22/08/2012 11:15

Hi Gangly, my due date is 14th of October. I was going to work until 38 weeks, but now glad I changed my mind. Looking forward to some 'me' time, afternoon naps and generally getting things done before Bubs puts in an appearance. My DH keeps pointing out that It's not long until I start my 'long holiday'!! Grrrrr he's lucky that he's still got both testicles Wink.

Yup I'm the same - 21st of September leaving date for me. Can't wait! I'm lucky enough to work from home most days so this week I've done a grand total of absolutely nothing. Trying to write a document at the moment but I keep being distracted by Mumsnet.
I have a countdown app on my phone which counts days hours minutes and seconds til 1630 on the 21st Sept :)

ganglygiraffe · 22/08/2012 11:22

I'm due on the 14th too!

I think it's hard to be motivated at work when your mind is else-where. I'm saving washing all the baby's clothes until I'm on maternity leave and I really am chomping at the bit now!

Is this your first baby?

ganglygiraffe · 22/08/2012 11:23

Oooh, what's the app called Tril?

milli2512 · 22/08/2012 11:28

Gangly - yes first baby. How about you?

My mind is anywhere but work! Like you I'm planning to wash baby clothes, bedding etc. Keep seeing jobs around the house that I want to tackle, exciting stuff like cleaning the fridge, windows and tackling cobwebs. Good god I'm so rock 'n' roll these days!

trilottie · 22/08/2012 11:31

Its called T-Zero - a free iphone app. I have 2 timers on it, one for maternity leave and one for due date.
I have already caved in and washed the baby's clothes but I am trying to save lots of the bits and bobs we need to buy until M leave so I don't end up buying random useless stuff if I get bored.

RetroMum1 · 22/08/2012 11:32

I don't work but generally can't be bothered to do much at the moment, this is no 3 so it's a miracle that I get the washing done and get dd and DS to tennis, dance and the park! I feel really guilty but I knackered this time. All the things I couldn't wait to do when pregnant with DD and DS seem like a chore, I can't be bothered to get in the loft and find all the clothes and pack a hospital bag. I m really excited about this LO being born but getting ready seems like such hard work!

Trilobite I am delivering on the 19th Sept so I will have had mine by the time you start maternity leave which makes it seem really real and soon!

If this is your first really make the most of the few weeks on your own before LO arrives, you won't get it again!

Adviceinscotland · 22/08/2012 11:40

I'm only 7-8 weeks pg and already feel like that Blush

Does not help that I constantly feel sick and can hardly keep my eyes open.

I am going to start ml middle of feb so have a loooooong time to go!

newtonupontheheath · 22/08/2012 12:44

I'm finishing on the 10th.... Working from
Home today- Wink

panicnotanymore · 22/08/2012 12:57

I'm not being funny, but unless you have either a very uninterested employer or you aren't planning on going back it would be a good idea to at least look extra committed and enthusiastic. It is really hard to get work at the moment, and they are a lot of highly qualified enthusiastic talented people me Wink actively targeting companies for work. No boss is obligated to keep someone who isn't performing, pregnant or not.

Turquoisecat · 22/08/2012 13:04

panic - you're quite correct, you weren't funny Smile

I've got TWO DAYS after today! I don't mind work, and it's not too hard getting here, but not having to get up at 7 every morning will be bliss for as long as it lasts anyway

And I look very busy at work though it is mostly going to the toilet every four minutes Grin

oscarwilde · 22/08/2012 13:20

I'm not trying to scaremonger and also suffering motivation issues, but I was put at risk of redundancy during my last mat leave. Wasn't made redundant in the end but it was insanely stressful. Suddenly I had no access to files, documents, contact details I would have taken with me if moving on voluntarily; mentally was totally switched off and the prospect of suddenly updating my CV and trying to remember my "recent achievements" was very daunting. Wiping up puke and learning to breastfeed wasn't really going to cut it.
So - before you switch off completely, I would recommend that you look after No1 before you leave. 6-12 months is a long time to be gone from an office. At a minimum, having an updated CV, your most recent appraisals and a formal "leaving appraisal" is a really good place to start if your circumstances change while you are off.

newtonupontheheath · 22/08/2012 13:32

Me too Oscar I went to a presentation to learn that 60% of mine and my DP's respective departments were going Shock when DS was 5 weeks old and leaked bm everywhere however my employer put lots in place to support everybody, and if I'm not mistaken, you are a priority for re-deployment when you are on mat leave. There is some legislation, but I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head Quick google

Of course people become complacent and lethargic as mat leave approaches,it's probably the only time off work most people get between starting and finishing your working life (not including unemployment of course) plus having a baby to look forward to is lovely, why wouldn't you be focusing on that and that alone?!

Any decent employer would be supporting a pregnant lady in arrangements for her time off be that handing over work, mat leave cover, and helping her wind down. Agree re the appraisal before you leave, review objectives and when you meet with your line manager whilst off make sure you have a clear idea of what you are returning to.

datingthedevil · 22/08/2012 13:43

Like many of you, I don't give a s**t about my work anymore. I have another 12 weeks left until I start my mat leave and I'm counting down the number of days left that I have to work in London. After today I have another 34 commutes up here :)

One of my colleagues was trying to tell me that I need to show that I'm interested in X and need to learn how to do Y and that it's good for me to get on in the company, show i'm keen to learn etc. She doesnt understand that I really dont care one bit. I just want to come in, do my job (or as little as I can) and go home.

I'm sure my boss is actually really mad with me. I only joined him in February as his PA retired. I think he wanted someone a bit longer term than 8 months.

milli2512 · 22/08/2012 13:58

Panic - My comments must seem annoying to someone who is currently trying to find a job, and I apologise for that, but I don't apologise for having my mind more on impending motherhood than work in the few weeks before ML when I have worked hard in this job for nearly 5 years. I wish you luck in your job search.

preggersshock · 22/08/2012 14:10

28th September for me! 5 weeks to go Smile. It's really hard to be motivated to get things done when you are winding down one thing to start another, coupled with tiredness, hormones and all the other pregnancy related stuff getting through a working day is a challenge! I agree with you Milli, impending motherhood is definitely something to be focused on, there would be something wrong if not! Wink.

cakeandcava · 22/08/2012 14:11

I could have written this OP! Also going on leave in 3+ weeks, also finding it hard to concentrate and care. Doesn't help that I'm wrapping up my projects at the moment, and will have a few weeks of 'lingering' and doing small things -when it is soooo much more interesting to google info about cots and nappies and such things... :)

Absolutely roll on Sep 14th!

trilottie · 22/08/2012 14:50

Panic - good luck with your job search.
I do actually have a disinterested employer, in fact they couldn't give a flying f* about most of their employees, from the man who we have to donate our holiday to so he can look after his newly born daughter who is having multiple heart ops because they won't give him any compassionate leave, to the bloke who asked for time off in lieu after he flew to and from the US office on 2 weekends and was turned down, I take the view that if they don't care why should I.
Its also looking likely that they won't accept my request for part time working when I come back 'because we haven't advertised any part time positions' despite this being not a good enough reason and the fact that (currently anyway) there isn't enough work on anyway.
And breathe... Roll on 21st September! (30 days 1 hour and 40 mins to go...)

whatsoever · 22/08/2012 15:21

I'm with you OP. My last day in the office is 7 September. Luckily as most of my work is advisory/project based, no-one wants to start me on anything new that I won't be around to finish, so it's perfectly possible to coast at the moment.

dollyindub · 22/08/2012 15:46

Next Friday ladies!!! Grin
I have a very active job in a very busy hospital and can't wait to finish. The combination of constant peeing, heat and 4 hours sleep per night are wrecking my head (and body!) It's all I can do to get myself out of the front door in the mornings...
And the time just flies in - it only seems like yesterday that I had 12 weeks to go Smile

OctoberOctober · 22/08/2012 16:02

I finish on 14 Sept too and it can't come round quick enough!

However, instead of a nice gentle wind down the pace seems to have picked up inexorably and I've got deadlines looming and loads of stuff to do before I leave. My mgr isn't helping I this respect either by adding in loads of things she wants done before I leave.

Last month end process next week which will be helpful though!
