Any advice for morning sickness on the morning commute?

I am 6+1 today and morning sickness has kicked in.

I am off today, luckily, but having just been very sick at the time I would normally be on my hour long commute...does anyone have any advice/tips to help me throwing up on my fellow misearble commuters?!

Don't drink water first thing. It sloshes about horribly

Carry a roll of large freezer bags so that if you do need to puke, you have a quick place other than the floor!

I found those travel sickness bands helped a tiny bit so worth a try.

Tissues and hand wipes also good to have plus something to tie your hair back with.

I find that some days i need to eat and some days eating makes it worse; it's impossible to tell tbh and really just trial and error.

You have my sympathy - northern line tube every morning is bad enough but at least I can get off every three minutes if needs be (and I have had to do this more than once).

In my first pregnancy crackers fended off sickness, the second time boiled sweets.

Flisspaps · 21/08/2012 10:47

My midwife recommended Mars bars when
I was having DD - MS is caused by low blood sugar apparently, so having one to hand AT ALL TIMES was a bloody lifesaver and nicer than plain bloody biscuits or toast.

May I recommend ASDAs own fruit flavour heartburn sweets for when the heartburn kicks in in a few weeks? Grin

I'm 5+3 and just starting to experience this, I'm finding fruit gums helpful, or really cold, hard haribo star mix. I'm a Northern Line commuter, so will be praying these carry on settling the nausea!

Freezer bags! Genius!

I think crackers may help too, I tried one on Sunday and it seemed to work. I will avoid flat water, this makes me very sick when hungover and vomitting usually, I may have to buy some fizzy drinks.

Right off to buy massive sick bags, wipes, mini mouth wash and crackers/sweets.

Thanks everyone Smile

My morning sickness manifested as the "puke sweats" on the tube - trial and error led me to some success with:

Travel bands with boiled sweets and Lucozade

Honestly, fizzy drinks really helped. However my boiled sweets melted in my handbag such was the temperature on the tube! Definitely carry wet wipes too. They're so good if you're feeling hot and of course mopping up.

angeltattoo · 21/08/2012 12:18

Lucozade might work, I find fizzy drinks don't make me sick amd the glucose would work the same way as the mars bar suggested above.

Thank you!

Don't get cheap freezer bags - you need good sturdy ones that won't tear a hole in the bottom when you rip it off the roll in a hurry! I can recommend Lidl large freezer bags - my puking bag of choice. Oh the glamour.

Jumping all the staff at NL stations have been really lovely to me. London Bridge the nicest, a lovely man stood beside me (but not too close) and made me laugh in between puking, got someone to get me a bottle of water and then took my bag of puke away. Also the NL gets a bad rep but I have people falling over themselves to get me a seat, moving from half way down the carriage, demanding other people get up. It's almost embarrassing but I always say thank you in my most grateful voice.

Maybe get a "Baby on Board" button ASAP? Thank goodness I didn't have to commute while being sick - I could barely set foot on a bus/ train for 10 weeks as it made it so much worse! My advice is to take bags, suck on sweets (unless sugar makes you ill as it did me - then try crackers!) and wear that badge. Not sure if it will work so early, but it certainly has for me since about 15 weeks or whenever they sent it to me in the mail. The sad thing is - when I really needed a seat badly, I didn't have a bump yet!!

angeltattoo · 21/08/2012 14:30

How do you actually get the BoB badge? I see them all over amd always wonder where they come from?

I'm at London Bridge too :-)

You literally just e-mail TFL Baby On Board .

I sent an e-mail with my address requesting a badge. It arrived at my house about 2 days later!

I'm pretty sure they've got them behind the counter in most big stations as well, but I was still ill at that point and didn't much feel like making any trips.

PeazlyPops · 21/08/2012 15:40

Those fizzy love heart sweets really helped me.

HazeltheMcWitch · 21/08/2012 15:44

If I was feeling sick, I found that mint helped me not actually throw up. But gum did. Extra strong mints were too strong, so it was good old Polos for me!

And oatcakes were my portable snack of choice.

HazeltheMcWitch · 21/08/2012 15:47

Sorry, meant to add that I too found LU staff nice. On Nothern and Victoria lines. Also passengers were ok. And on the 2 occasions where I felt dreadful before I looked pregnant, once someone offered me their seat as I 'looked tired', and once I asked if I could sit down before I fainted. A couple of people went to stand up straight away. Honestly, most people are nice.

minipie · 21/08/2012 16:13

The thing I found difficult on the NL was the smell. If anyone smelled of stale booze or food I felt worse. You might want to carry something that smells ok to you so you can sniff that instead? Citrussy smells worked well for me.

I also recommend crunchy cereal bars eg the Nature Valley ones (they do a ginger version which is great) to ward off sickness in the morning. In general something sweet and dry seemed best.

sockmonkey · 21/08/2012 16:21

bit of an odd one, but carry an orange. when you feel a bit queezy, dig a nail into the skin & sniff it. The citrus smell really helped me.
Barley sugars helped with DD. Crackers with DS2 & Lion bars with DS1.

angeltattoo · 21/08/2012 16:57

Ohh, I love lion bars!

Great, really useful, thank you - have emailed for a badge will have to remember to hide it from colleagues for next 6 weeks

re badges, I just asked at my local tube station and they handed one over.

jumpingjackhash · 21/08/2012 20:35

Good to hear NL peeps are nice! Tbh, I always offer my seat up to pg ladies or old/ wobbly looking people so hoping for some payback when I need a seat! Once we've had our 7 wk scan I'll definitely get a badge!

NoMoreWasabi · 21/08/2012 20:38

I found having a digestive biscuit before I got out of bed helped a lot with preparing me for the tube.

Jakeyblueblue · 21/08/2012 21:12

I didn't have to get the tube fortunately, but found that i felt at my worst at around 8- 9am when I was trying to get ready and into work. It would slowly ease off as the day progressed. I was late nearly everyday because I had to keep stopping to puke. In the end my boss suggested I just started work an hour later and finished an hour later. This really helped as I could take my time getting ready. Dont know if this may be an option for you? Also I found that if I downed a pint of water before I got out of bed then I would immediately be really sick and this seemed to be preferable to fighting that constant nausea trying to stop yourself puking. It was almost quite satisfying and I def felt better quicker after doing this. Smile

angeltattoo · 22/08/2012 10:35

I gad a bottle of lucozade and some dry crackers this morning and though nauseous, i managed not to vom!

There may be hope yet...Grin

Oh god the tube, the summer and morning sickness - shudder. Sucking cherry drops, eyes closed and hanging on for dear life worked for me.
