Fainting during pregnancy. Is this just a one off?

I'm 13 weeks and fainted today at work. Was pretty bad as I did my head and ended up at a&e getting 3 staples to my head (as well as the embarressment of it happening in the middle of the canteen at lunchtime and being carted out of work by ambulance).

I'm feeling a bit worried now as not sure whether it will happen again. Not sure if I should drive or if I'll be ok home alone looking after my dd. Nothing like this happened during my last pregnancy. Has this happened to anybody else and was it just a one off, or something that kept on happening?

It's very common in pregnancy especially in the first trimester which you're now at the end of :)
It's usually nothing to worry about.

I fainted at about 32 weeks and had everytest and scan to try to find out why in the end it was lack of iron which iron tablets soon sorted out, might be worth asking your midwife for advice

I didn't mean my post to sound unsympathetic. How awful to bash your head. You were really unlucky not to feel faint before you actually did faint. If you WERE going to faint again you'd probably feel it coming over you and have time to sit down.

I fainted at 8 weeks - I think heat and exhaustion make bad bed fellows. Blood pressure etc sorted and all is well.

  • always stand up slooooowwwwwly
  • try to avoid going from a really hot room to a really cold room quickly
  • if you feel a bit dizzy before you black out get your head down.

I had the whole fainting thing, it seems to have stopped now but it was really embarrassing.

Get your blood pressure and your iron levels checked.

I fainted at about 13 weeks, and a gynae doctor I work with told me it's very common as your placenta starts to take over but you haven't produced quite enough extra blood yet. I only fainted the once.

i've had a few fainting episodes, was already taking some iron but am expecting twins and am a vegetarian so think was still lacking. have been on extra iron for a week and feeling so much better!

I fainted on Sunday, hitting my head and ended up in A&E as well. They were thinking dehydration and heat. Just take it easy, and if you feel light headed you need to get down - the floor is the best place.

Blimey, you poor thing!

I fainted at about 15-16 weeks on the train. It was hot, I'd just walked up the stairs and there were no seats. All of a sudden the carraige was spinning and I could feel sweat running down my face. Luckily I was holding on to one of the upright poles as I slid to the floor. Did spin round whilst holding the pole so it kind of looked like I was trying out my pole-dancing moves Grin

Didn't happen again. But probably because I realised I needed to slow down a bit and drink more fluids.

I fainted at about ten weeks second time around and felt faint periodically for about 3 weeks. I took it as a positive because my bp was low, (it had got too high first time around, which, happily, didn't happen again.)
Remember to drink enough, stand-up slowly. Another positive was that I was well looked after at work after that. Hope your head feels better soon.

I've had fainting days on and off for the last 2 weeks (6-8 weeks). Doc said I have very low blood pressure so need to watch myself, but said this is common during the first trimester.

Poor you bumping your head though, luckily i've been able to get myself closer to the ground before actually going. Has been a bit of a giggle between me and my partner actually, I keep coming round in random parts of the house. Not as funny in public though! Hope it gets better for you xx

CountryKitty · 21/08/2012 21:45

Oh no you poor thing! Know where you're coming from though as I've been a fainter with each of my 3 pg's. As op said previously hopefully you'll feel it coming on next time (which there might not be) and can get yourself sitting / lying down.

Each time I faint I'm such a crying mess when I come round. It's so embarrassing - but I can't help it! Hopefully yours was a one-off - fingers crossed!

I am 14 + 5 and have fainted a couple of times. The last time was yesterday on the bathroom floor but luckily had time to get down before it happened so didn't hurt myself. In fact, after I came round I promptly fell asleep. DH couldn't believe his eyes when he wondered where I was and found me fast asleep on the bathroom floor! Anyway, I had a hospital appointment today and told them about it. The doctor checked my blood pressure lying down and standing up and said that it was too low. So she said that I should be eating more salt. Unusual thing for a doctor to say! Anyway, she said it would help so thought I would pass on her advice.
